Pirates want to extend McCutchen five years

By Matt Snyder

The Pirates have been talking to star center fielder Andrew McCutchen about a contract extension for just over a week. Tuesday, Jon Heyman of SI.com reported that the Pirates are "insisting on at least" a five-year extension. It makes sense, because McCutchen has four arbitration years remaining, so the Pirates are looking to eat up at least one free agency season. It's not a way of being cheap, it's actually more a way to trying to solidify the future and build around McCutchen.

The timing is quite good for the Pirates to make a deal of this sort. They are currently above .500 and starting to win back some fans. Purging good players via trade has long turned fans away, so taking the opportunity to sign McCutchen long-term in the midst of playing good baseball would do wonders for the franchise's popularity at present. The die-hard fans know this ownership group and general manager are working on a plan and haven't made the types of moronic moves as have groups in the past, but locking up McCutchen for five or six years would prove it to the masses and help shed the stigma.

McCutchen, 24, is certainly worthy of building around. Last season, his first full one in the majors, he hit .286 with 35 doubles, five triples, 16 home runs, 56 RBI, 94 runs, 33 stolen bases and an .814 OPS.

He's got speed and power, and the type of charisma that makes him the perfect face of the new Pirates.

How about if they sign STL pitching coach Dave Duncan
Don't sell Ray Searge short. He's already done a nice job with this staff.  Look at their team stats so far. With the exception of last night and a few bullpen hiccups, they have been pretty solid so far. I agree pitching wins, but you also have to build a group of position players that the fans want to support.  McCutchen is the kind of guy that brings excitement back to the ballpark and that's what the gates need.  Either way...management making positive moves is the key as opposed to the fire sale that occurs every year.

How about if they sign STL pitching coach Dave Duncan for whatever it takes, sign their up and coming stars, listen to Duncan about who to keep, sign etc. and then compete!!  Sounds farfetched right or does it?  With even a better than average front office and an astute pitching coach like Duncan the Bucs could really surprise!!  Just sayin"

Management can do wonders for ticket sales and bringing the fans back by taking care of McCutchen right now.  Get that 5 year extension signed and then move onto Tabata, Alvarez and Walker.  Figure out which catcher you are going to go with in Snyder or Doumit and you've got half the lineup solidified.  The pitching has been vastly improved thus far this season as well.  This is the first time in a really long time that management legitimately has a shot of building around a player and making something happen.  If they screw this up and don't lock up McCutchen, it's only going to further the futility for the organization.  The time is now.  Raise the Jolly Roger!!!

Pirates want to extend McCutchen five years

Love reading this.  As the post points out, many Pirates fans can see that management finally has a real plan in place here.  It would sure be nice to sign him up for 5 years and quiet down some of that "They're just gonna trade him away" talk that's bound to continue every time his name is brought up. Cutch seems like the kind of player that will sign a contract and ride it out with the team as well, if his comments are to be believed, which to be honest, he's given no one a reason to disbelieve him thus far.
