Posey speaks to reporters, not happy with Cousins

By Matt Snyder

Scott Cousins of the Marlins barrelled over Giants catcher Buster Posey in a home plate collision that broke Posey's leg two nights ago. Since then, the talk of baseball has centered around the play -- namely, if there should be more protection for catchers and a discussion of whether the hit was dirty. Every dimension has been covered ad nauseam, but we hadn't heard from Posey himself. Until now.

Friday afternoon, Posey spoke to some Giants' beat writers and -- while remaining respectful -- he doesn't sound pleased with Cousins. Posey believes he left a lane for Cousins to slide into home plate without contact and that "[Cousins] chose to come at me." (Andrew Baggerly via Twitter)

Posey also reportedly said plays like this should be reviewed by the league and the players union and that he's not interested in talking to Cousins (Hank Schulman via Twitter), who has reportedly left several messages with Posey that haven't been returned.

“I don’t know if it really matters. If it’s something that would make him feel better … I can imagine if I was on the other end, that would be just about as difficult to know that a play you were involved in has more than likely put somebody out for the rest of the year. But again, I’m kind of indifferent, I guess.” (Extra Baggs)

Posey also said of Cousins, "I want to make this very clear: I don’t know Cousins, I’m not out to villify Cousins in any way whatsoever. It happened and it’s over with."

As for his own recovery, Posey expressed that he is likely out for the season. It's a sentiment that was reported, but then there seemed to be some hope he might make it back when it was revealed there was no damage to his knee.

Posey speaks to reporters, not happy with Cousins

It was a legal play with an unfortunate outcome.  It reminded me of Mike Scioscia and all the hits he took as a catcher.  He took a lot of vicious hits and never got hurt as bad as Puss..I mean Posey.  I guess they don't make catchers like they used to. I'm sure Posey's life partner will take good care of him during his time of need.

Posey speaks to reporters, not happy with Cousins

Posey is under no obligation to like what happened on that play and tries but fails to take the high road.  In the 2010 NLCS there was a bang bang play where he tagged out the Phillie's runner, who had chosen an off angle path to slide and hit Posey's glove arm simultaneously, and it spun him around.
That runner could well have plowed into Posey to jar the ball and it would have been legal because he was in the base path and when a catcher or any defensive player is in the base path it is the same as blocking the plate, bag and the runners path which they have a right to.  I am a huge Posey and Giants fan, but have to admit that the play was clean according to the rule book.  I am sure he will get over it with time, he is pretty young after all so lets give the kid a break. I would be pissed and far less eloquent than he was two days after the fact if someone broke my leg, accident or not. Talking rule changes or punishment only seems like favoritism and useless complaining about an age old rule in baseball that should not be changed. It sucks for everyone that a good player is gone for the year but it is the nature of the sport, the game within the game.

Posey speaks to reporters, not happy with Cousins

After reading these ridiculous comments
from non-athletes judging Posey's character because he's still upset two days after the collision that ended his season (and maybe his career?), I'm even more convinced that modern sports fans are nothing more than spectators at a Roman coliseum watching gladiators killing each other for our amusement.  These idiots are loaded with advice and criticism for a 24 year old kid because they don't think he's man enough to play a sport they woiuld be cowards to even attempt at the pro level.  What they really want is to see is blood, fist fights, high impact collisions, and conflict in a sport that isn't even a contact sport in the first place.  Sounds like these low-lifes are missing the NFL already.

Sounds like these cowards ripping Posey for being a cry baby are from the same LA gang members cruising parking lot looking to beat on woman and children to satisfy their own hollow absence of empathy and morals.  Hey losers, man up and step into the base line while I take a cheap shot at you.

What a stupid comment.  Fosse never cried about it.  You better go read the Cleveland papers.  It was a freaking All-Star game and ruined his career.    Get Fosse and Rose in the same room and see what happens.  Let's see I am a very talented young catcher becoming the leader of a decent but very young Indian's team.  Some jerk playing in an All-Star game blows out my knee on a dirty play.  Yep Fosse had no ill feelings.   Get real...he felt just like Posey and was probably even more upset at Rose than Posey was at Cousins.   Rose was just lucky they didn't have interleague play back than.  Cleveland had some hard throwing crazy hurlers!

I say this is completely clean. i feel bad for the guy, i do. posey is a really solid player. but its in the twelth, tie game, two good teams, the guy juts wanted the win, no intent, No way he was able to think about seeing a lane in that split second he was deciding to slide or colide.its a part of the game. Please dont change the rules.

Posey speaks to reporters, not happy with Cousins

it was clearly a clean play and aggressive one pete rose style of baseball he blocked the plate simply as that case close this nonsense about leaving a lane is crazy when you are running full tilt toward the plate trying to score the only run of the game and someone is crouched blocking the plate you cant exactly search for a lane if cousins tried to slide into this so called imaginary lane it probably would have shattered his ankles

Posey speaks to reporters, not happy with Cousins

Crybaby? Cousins went out of his way -- took an extra stride TOWARD Posey IN FAIR TERRITORY and hit him on the RIGHT shoulder -- all the way across his body. NO NEED for that.

I've taken and given some pretty healthy shots on plays at the plate, and none were cheap like that. And let me tell you, whichever end of those you're on, they hurt. So forget that crybaby stuff. Block the plate, expect to get hit. Simple as that. But Posey wasn't blocking the plate!

Posey speaks to reporters, not happy with Cousins

hey , why don't you watch the interview with Posey from spring training.  He's the one who said that it was part of the game and plays like that were gonna happen.  He even described the same exact play that happened to him saying that that is the toughest play for a catcher and the easiest way for a catcher to get hurt if there is a collision and now because it happens to be him who got hurt and was at the raw end of the hit he wants to be bitter about it?  It was a tough play at the plate and Cousins felt it was the only way to make it safely into home plate and he has every right to be pissed that he is hurt as bad as he is and likely done for the season, but plays like this happen all the time and yes catchers will get hurt and even the runners will too so he does need to stop bitching.  I would like to hear Posey's tone if it was cousins who broke his leg.  Posey is a great player and has a great career ahead of him, but he has to understand the stuff that will happen from being a catcher on a close play like that.
