Posey speaks to reporters, not happy with Cousins

Scott Cousins of the Marlins barrelled over Giants catcher Buster Posey in a home plate collision that broke Posey's leg two nights ago. Since then, the talk of baseball has centered around the play -- namely, if there should be more protection for catchers and a discussion of whether the hit was dirty. Every dimension has been covered ad nauseam, but we hadn't heard from Posey himself. Until now.

Friday afternoon, Posey spoke to some Giants' beat writers and -- while remaining respectful -- he doesn't sound pleased with Cousins. Posey believes he left a lane for Cousins to slide into home plate without contact and that "[Cousins] chose to come at me." (Andrew Baggerly via Twitter)

Posey also reportedly said plays like this should be reviewed by the league and the players union and that he's not interested in talking to Cousins (Hank Schulman via Twitter), who has reportedly left several messages with Posey that haven't been returned.

“I don’t know if it really matters. If it’s something that would make him feel better … I can imagine if I was on the other end, that would be just about as difficult to know that a play you were involved in has more than likely put somebody out for the rest of the year. But again, I’m kind of indifferent, I guess.” (Extra Baggs)

Posey also said of Cousins, "I want to make this very clear: I don’t know Cousins, I’m not out to villify Cousins in any way whatsoever. It happened and it’s over with."

As for his own recovery, Posey expressed that he is likely out for the season. It's a sentiment that was reported, but then there seemed to be some hope he might make it back when it was revealed there was no damage to his knee.

Everyone bashing Posey is either too stupid to read or just needs to bash someone to feel better about themselves, which is really pathetic. He never bashed Cousins, read the story you illiterate mongoloids.

It was legal and you can run into the firstbaseman, if hes blocking the base...know the rules before you comment!

It was a legal Hit, Posey put himself to block the plate and i dont care if his head was turned, check out Posey highlights on Youtube and see how many times hes been ran into...nothing ever said, but the one time he gets hurt...everyone screams about it...obviously, those that are complaining, dont know baseball!

Cry me a river catcher. You play catcher, you covered the plate, you blocked the runner and you got nailed. Its part of baseball, if you dont like it, play golf. Stop your cry baby antics and just suck it up and drive on...another baby millionaire who thinks we care...

It was a legal hit and should not be reviewed.  It was unfortunate.

That being said, Cousins was lining up for the collision two thirds of the way down the line.  You could tell it by the angle he took.  You cannot pass this BS over me that he had no time to react.  It's nonsense as it was pre-meditated.

Allthat being said, Nyjer Morgan and Prince Fielder both went out of the baseline to hit Brian McCann earlier this year and nobody mentioned it simply because McCann wasn't seriously injured.  Fielder actually missed the base he ran so far out of the baseline to deliver a shoulder charge, and he had to go back and touch the plate.

While it is perfectly legal the league needs to put an end to it.  Change the rule that a runner cannot interfere with a fielder trying to field a BATTED ball, to read interfere with a fielder trying to field ANY ball, as long as that fielder is not directly impeding the runner.

Sure, there will still be some collisions when catchers with the ball try to block the plate.  Sure, there will still be some catchers blockign the plate when they shouldn't (I believe they call that obstruction or interference in the rule book and it should be called and the offense allowed to advance a base).  Sure, there will still be questionable plays where a collision wasn't neccessary or timing was too close.  BUT .. it will prevent the head-hunting that some of these players do going into home.

I firmly believe Cousins was going to hit Posey no matter whatbased on his angle to the plate and body lean.  He had pre-determined it.  Posey was not blocking the plate.  Put a rule in for this that gives a suspension and an out/dead ball situation and be done with it.  It will not change the 'spirit' of the game, it will just take the 'thug' out of it.

All that being said, I can see why Giants fans are upset that Hanley or someone on Florida didn't take one in the eye socket.  After all, its the way the thugs on this board and some of them in the field want the game to be played.  Let's put all the stars out of commission via avoidable injuries so we get to see far less talented players on the field.  No one wants to watch the game being played as it was designed.. as a test of skill.  Let's take it down to beer league mentality.

If your referring to me, not a fan of either, just a Detroit fan.  Which by the way if your a sharks fan, that was one of the best series I've seen in a long time.

Even after being disabled for the rest of the season and possibly through as a catcher for the rest of his career, Posey continues to show a maturity and class beyond his years.  I got nothing but admiration for this kid.  I hope he makes it back to action sooner than he expects (but without cutting any corners in the rehab process), and that he and the Giants thrive with whatever position changes need to be made along the way.
