Posey speaks to reporters, not happy with Cousins

Scott Cousins of the Marlins barrelled over Giants catcher Buster Posey in a home plate collision that broke Posey's leg two nights ago. Since then, the talk of baseball has centered around the play -- namely, if there should be more protection for catchers and a discussion of whether the hit was dirty. Every dimension has been covered ad nauseam, but we hadn't heard from Posey himself. Until now.

Friday afternoon, Posey spoke to some Giants' beat writers and -- while remaining respectful -- he doesn't sound pleased with Cousins. Posey believes he left a lane for Cousins to slide into home plate without contact and that "[Cousins] chose to come at me." (Andrew Baggerly via Twitter)

Posey also reportedly said plays like this should be reviewed by the league and the players union and that he's not interested in talking to Cousins (Hank Schulman via Twitter), who has reportedly left several messages with Posey that haven't been returned.

“I don’t know if it really matters. If it’s something that would make him feel better … I can imagine if I was on the other end, that would be just about as difficult to know that a play you were involved in has more than likely put somebody out for the rest of the year. But again, I’m kind of indifferent, I guess.” (Extra Baggs)

Posey also said of Cousins, "I want to make this very clear: I don’t know Cousins, I’m not out to villify Cousins in any way whatsoever. It happened and it’s over with."

As for his own recovery, Posey expressed that he is likely out for the season. It's a sentiment that was reported, but then there seemed to be some hope he might make it back when it was revealed there was no damage to his knee.

Cpezz, your right that the last part of my post didn't make sense. ( I had to go outside to get the chicken off the barbie.) the point I didn't finish is thus. I wasn't worried about " a high Slow one" , I was worried about seeing this guys  friends in the parking lot or at the bar after the game. i'm not a tough guy, so it was possible i would have had to answer for my actions off the diamond.( We have some some real old school leagues up here in Ontario.Back to the original point. I am surprised there wasn't reprisal by the Giants even though it was probably an accident. Can you imagine the mayhem if the 1975 Flyers would have had somebody "accidently hurt Bernie Parent??? ( not a Hockey fan? google "Broad Street Bullies")

Opposite side Mr. Posey:

My sophmore year of high school I was on the receiving end of an amazing throw from our left fielder that resulted in the guy sliding in to my shin guard.  That player was a pre season all state QB for the upcoming year as a junior.  I felt like crap as the ambulance came to pick him up off the field.  Its a part of sports, even as my reference to petty high school memories will seem unacceptable to many.  I'm sorry SF fans, I really am, that you lost an imporatant part of your team.  Obviously, the young kid needs to accept that phone call of apology instead of looking like a cry baby on the national stage.  Period.

So, after feeling manly, did they come back at you with chin music in the slow pitch softball league? Why would you feel like quite the man running over a guy with absolutely no gear on? You are not a "so-called old school tough guy".

All you " so called old school tough guys" say it was a hardnosed baseball play, which is fine if thats you're opinion. Then what is your problem with one of the Giants pitchers "accidently" beanig Hanley ramirez with a 'high hard one' thats old school baseball as well.( As an aside, although i have absolutely no way to prove this, and I know there is an awful lot of bullshiite posted on this page,) In the late 80's I came in hard to home in a Rec league Slopitch game and broke the poor catchers leg. ( Poor bugger was wearing blue jeans and had a pack of cigaretttes in his hip pocket, i remember that. I scored the run and thought I was quite the man but I still felt awfully bad about the poor bugger I took out. Point being, If you want to run the catcher, get ready for some 'chin music'

Cousins COULD have slide to home plate... but let's not forget that Cousins did not have the time to realised the ball was loose at the moment. Cousins is not Ricky Henderson, the sacrifice fly was very short... the outfielder had a good arm. That was a perfect situation for a contact. No cheapshot here... unless you consider every contact with a catcher cheap! what is cheap is when a player try to spike at 2nd base even when he's a sure out to ruin the douple-play. that's dirty and cheap.

The best play here was the contact with the catcher. It gives you 2 options to be safe. sliding gives you only chance. That was Ty Cobb baseball and in the end, we won the game!! I hope he will do the exact same play next opportunety. Agressive baserunning is good!

Before people start putting words in Buster's mouth, accusing him of whining and what not, I suggest people actually FOLLOW THE LINKS and read the interview (the best is the link named Extra Baggs).  Nothing he says sounds very unreasonable or whiny to me.
