Posey speaks to reporters, not happy with Cousins

By Matt Snyder

Scott Cousins of the Marlins barrelled over Giants catcher Buster Posey in a home plate collision that broke Posey's leg two nights ago. Since then, the talk of baseball has centered around the play -- namely, if there should be more protection for catchers and a discussion of whether the hit was dirty. Every dimension has been covered ad nauseam, but we hadn't heard from Posey himself. Until now.

Friday afternoon, Posey spoke to some Giants' beat writers and -- while remaining respectful -- he doesn't sound pleased with Cousins. Posey believes he left a lane for Cousins to slide into home plate without contact and that "[Cousins] chose to come at me." (Andrew Baggerly via Twitter)

Posey also reportedly said plays like this should be reviewed by the league and the players union and that he's not interested in talking to Cousins (Hank Schulman via Twitter), who has reportedly left several messages with Posey that haven't been returned.

“I don’t know if it really matters. If it’s something that would make him feel better … I can imagine if I was on the other end, that would be just about as difficult to know that a play you were involved in has more than likely put somebody out for the rest of the year. But again, I’m kind of indifferent, I guess.” (Extra Baggs)

Posey also said of Cousins, "I want to make this very clear: I don’t know Cousins, I’m not out to villify Cousins in any way whatsoever. It happened and it’s over with."

As for his own recovery, Posey expressed that he is likely out for the season. It's a sentiment that was reported, but then there seemed to be some hope he might make it back when it was revealed there was no damage to his knee.

I guess Posey didn't get the message that you don't stand on the track when the train is coming through

Whether the base runner ran into the catcher or the catcher was blocking home plate both have equal rights to the plate. Yes the Giants and Marlins have differant views Buster Posey was trying to get into position to make the tag and the runner was trying to get to the plate first. How would these new catchers hold up against Pete Rose or Micheal Jack Schmidt or Willie Mayes and Joe Morgan always went in with spikes up. What more do you do to protect players nothing we have turned these players into primadonas in the 50 years I have watched and played baseball yes I was an old school player.

Wah, wah, wah, its part of the game! If you don't like it Posey then move to another position! Otherwise quit crying because Cousins did exactly what he was suppose to do!

I am not a Giant or Florida fan so I really don't have a reason to pick sides.
That was a cheap shot. I've heard people say if you block the plate you have to deal with the contact but the fact of the matter is he didn't block the plate. Look at the replay. It clearly shows He gave the runner room to slide and was in front of the plate when he tried catching the throw. The runner went out of his way to hit the catcher when he could have slid directly to the plate
I am not a fan of either team either, but what I saw is that while Posey started in front of the plate, he did turn (twisting awkwardly over his left ankle btw) to put himself in the basepath trying to catch the ball and make the tag -- Cousins' choice (1) slide and hope to avoid the tag and get a hand or foot on the plate (maybe hurting himself sliding into a catcher) or (2) run through the catcher as is accepted practice in baseball in that situation.  Cousins' play was absolutely clean.  Annother poster was right -- if a Giant had blown up the Marlins' catcher (or any catcher) and scored a winning run in the same situation they would be saying "sorry the catcher got hurt but that's the way the game is played" and contratulating their teammate on the great play/great effort.

If a Giant "retaliates" by throwing at Cousins or any other Marlin a huge fine and lenghty suspension should be handed down.

He didn't block the plate at all.  Go watch the replays. He was to the front of the plate and towards 1st base.  As Cousins barreled towards him he turned towards Cousins, with probably a rising feeling of dread.  He had no time to lunge out of the way or anything and he did not move anywhere closer to home plate or try to block it.  Please review the replays as you are entirely incorrect in saying he was blocking the majority of the plate as he received the throw.. he was not blocking ANY of the plate!

I can't beleive you people think he is blocking the plate. He is not blocking any part of the plate. Not even close. He lunges to make a tag and his leg goes down on the ground in front of the plate in fair territory. Never for a second is he blocking any part of the plate. The guy dives at the catcher when he could have easily slid directly into home. Total cheap shot....not even close. I'm not saying what he did was illegal...just very cheap. I'm shocked he didn't get beaned. I'm sure he will at some point. Watch the replay. Posey never come close to blocking the plate. His knee is on the groun but it's in fair territory in front of the plate as he lunges to make the tag.

He blocked the majority of the plate as he was receiving the throw...... legal.  If you do that, including putting your knee down on the ground, you are open for a collision and potential injury.  He knows that.  He is just mad right now and should not be talking o reporters.  It's not that he "deserved" to get hurt, it just happens when you are a catcher and attempting to block the plate.

You all must be blind. He wasn't in the way. The runner clearly had room to slide directly into home plate. He went out of his way to hit the catcher. It's very clear if you watch the play

Posey speaks to reporters, not happy with Cousins

HEY GUYS, before you make comments calling Posey a little cry baby, please get all the full facts and read what Posey really said.  Mr. Synder, it's not the best idea to take quotes out of context to make it sound like Posey is putting 100% full blame on Cousins and being a little whiner! Here's the full story:   Also, everyone try to place yourself in Posey's shoes.. if it were you, how would you react after such a disastrous event?
