John Danks

By C. Trent Rosecrans

White Sox starter John Danks -- he of the 0-8 record and 5.25 ERA -- called Jose Bautista -- he of the 20 home runs -- a "clown" on Sunday.

Danks, who allowed six runs in the first inning of Sunday's 13-4 loss to the Blue Jays, was upset after Bautista popped up a 3-2 pitch for the second out of the Blue Jays' three-run fourth inning. Bautista tossed his bat, apparently upset with himself, and jogged toward first as the ball was caught.

See the play here -- and listen to the White Sox announcers unsurprisingly take Danks' side.

As Bautista headed back to the dugout, Danks had some words for baseball's best player of the season.

"I just told him to run the bases. He was out there acting like a [expletive] clown. I told him to run the bases," Danks told reporters, including the National Post. "He's a good player. He's had a great year and a half, no doubt, He's one of the best players in the league. He was out there acting like he's Babe Ruth or something. That's horse [stuff], I think"

Danks added, "He isn't that good to be acting like he needs to hit every ball out of the ballpark. That's just the way I feel. I have pride. I really do. I've had a pretty crappy year to this point, but I still have pride and I'm not going to let him sit out there and show me up like that. I just told him to run the bases and quit acting like a clown."

The thing is, nobody would have noticed had Danks not called attention to it. Players get upset with themselves all the time, spiking a bat his hardly something unique to Bautista. At that point, Danks maybe should've been happy he actually retired Bautista -- or any batter since he was trailing 9-2.

Here's Bautista's side:

"I was upset at missing a pitch, at myself," Bautista said. "If he took it the wrong way, I'm sorry, but I'm not here to make him feel good.

"It really doesn't matter to me what he thought. What I'm not going to allow is when I'm running by him, him yelling at me again, so I yelled back at him."

The Post also said White Sox announcer Ken Harrelson suggest on-air that Bautista was corking his bat -- he also admonished Bautista on-air about the incident with Danks. And then the announcer made a trip to the Blue Jays' clubhouse after the game, which writer John Lott described thusly:  "Harrelson made a special trip to the Toronto clubhouse after the game and fawningly introduced himself to Bautista. The two chatted for a few minutes. Apparently, the content of Bautista’s bat did not come up."

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

#1 To your first retort, I was not a making a judgement about either players actions in the incident more that at this point with no results to date working on getting Danks back to his average competitive self (3.77Era or lower in Hitter Friendly US Cell last 3 seasons) who cares if he has to pick a fight, sacrifice a chicken, or use any other arbitrary way of getting the so-called monkey off his back.
#2 It doesnt matter how it starts or who initiates it like in hockey  there are instances that a fight or flare-up can get guys going there adrenaline pumps up and takes over, again was referring that maybe some of his teammates would react and pick up their pitcher since they have not given him much help this season.
#3 I guess the truth comes out he is either killing your fantasy team this year with what has he done for you lately, where is your head man?? If you had an awesome dog for four years then your awesome buddy peed on the rug a couple times would ya say what have you done for me lately and put the dog down?? sounds like with your compassion level you would.

***OHHHH by the way in 11 games started for his team this year John Danks has 6 Quality Starts without a win sounds to me like even while struggling he is giving his team an important chance and thats a chance to WIN!!! OnPointW/ChaseQ

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

Danks' reaction is probably understandable, given his level of frustration during the game - and during the whole season, really.  What isn't excusable is Harrelson's unprofessional behavior.  Speaking of clowns, Harrelson should paint his face and put on a funny nose.  It would suit him.

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

The Honk suggesting a non-White Sox player is doing something wrong? You're kidding? That model of objectivity, Hawk Harrelson and his equally jerk of a broadcast partner are impossible to listen to. Way to go Hawk; blast some player on air and then attempt at being his pal later on. What a complete tool this a-hole is! He was responsible for running Tony LaRussa out of Chicago, though; so he can't be all bad.

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

I'd be pissed if I had popped that garbage pitch up too.  Maybe Danks thought since he was getting lit up that Bautista should have eased up his approach.  Maybe in the 9th or even 8th depending on the lead, but the 4th inning.  Come on Danks smarten up and start acting like a big leaguer.

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

He felt disrespected and reacted;

So, the batter shows frustration in popping up, and that's showing disrespect to the pitcher?? In what world?? Danks should worry more about getting outs than any reactions shown by the hitters. Very poor judgement, and outing by Danks!!

Heres to hoping it does spark a fire in J. Danks of the White Sox and it carries over to other pressing Teammates A. Dunn and A. Rios
Acting like a spoiled child doesn't "Spark Fires"!!

Postus Scriptus, anyone claiming this guy has no talent as a SP is ill-informed(check his numbers over the last four seasons I know you have the time) or upset he has not be producing on thier fantasy roster and are perpuating classlessness that theyre berating others for
2011..........0 -- 8. What have you done for me lately????

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

I gotta tell ya, Ive heard it all now! danks whom holds an 0-8 record with an ERA of 5.25 and I don't even know how he's got that, has absolutely no authority to say Bautista' name in reference to anything other than what a great year he's having ! Chicago must be in really bad shape if they have to keep putting that garbage on the hill every week. I'm sure he's frustrated and rightfully so, but he's gotta take those feelings out on the ball and not the batter. I don't think we have to listen to much more of his rhetoric as Chicago is going to have to pull someone up and give em a shot. Good luck Danks, see ya in AAA buddy.

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

Danks Has been Struggling mightily this season and from all appearances it seems to be his confidence or something of a mental nature.  He felt disrespected and reacted; at this point anything to get him going back to his otherwise steady quality production throughout the last couple/few seasons I say go for it.  Heres to hoping it does spark a fire in J. Danks of the White Sox and it carries over to other pressing Teammates A. Dunn and A. Rios and not only Chicagoans and MLB fans alike can start to enjoy or Hate that High Payroll more because right now its simply laughable for everybody.
