John Danks

By C. Trent Rosecrans

White Sox starter John Danks -- he of the 0-8 record and 5.25 ERA -- called Jose Bautista -- he of the 20 home runs -- a "clown" on Sunday.

Danks, who allowed six runs in the first inning of Sunday's 13-4 loss to the Blue Jays, was upset after Bautista popped up a 3-2 pitch for the second out of the Blue Jays' three-run fourth inning. Bautista tossed his bat, apparently upset with himself, and jogged toward first as the ball was caught.

See the play here -- and listen to the White Sox announcers unsurprisingly take Danks' side.

As Bautista headed back to the dugout, Danks had some words for baseball's best player of the season.

"I just told him to run the bases. He was out there acting like a [expletive] clown. I told him to run the bases," Danks told reporters, including the National Post. "He's a good player. He's had a great year and a half, no doubt, He's one of the best players in the league. He was out there acting like he's Babe Ruth or something. That's horse [stuff], I think"

Danks added, "He isn't that good to be acting like he needs to hit every ball out of the ballpark. That's just the way I feel. I have pride. I really do. I've had a pretty crappy year to this point, but I still have pride and I'm not going to let him sit out there and show me up like that. I just told him to run the bases and quit acting like a clown."

The thing is, nobody would have noticed had Danks not called attention to it. Players get upset with themselves all the time, spiking a bat his hardly something unique to Bautista. At that point, Danks maybe should've been happy he actually retired Bautista -- or any batter since he was trailing 9-2.

Here's Bautista's side:

"I was upset at missing a pitch, at myself," Bautista said. "If he took it the wrong way, I'm sorry, but I'm not here to make him feel good.

"It really doesn't matter to me what he thought. What I'm not going to allow is when I'm running by him, him yelling at me again, so I yelled back at him."

The Post also said White Sox announcer Ken Harrelson suggest on-air that Bautista was corking his bat -- he also admonished Bautista on-air about the incident with Danks. And then the announcer made a trip to the Blue Jays' clubhouse after the game, which writer John Lott described thusly:  "Harrelson made a special trip to the Toronto clubhouse after the game and fawningly introduced himself to Bautista. The two chatted for a few minutes. Apparently, the content of Bautista’s bat did not come up."

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

The reason Danks is so pissed isn't because Bautista is acting like a clown. It's because they are polar opposites right now. Bautista is on a roll, and has been since the beginning of last year. Danks, not so much. And every player whom is struggling, eventually take notice of the one's whom are not! Suck it up Danks! If you want Bautista or any other player to stop show-boating, strike them out!

That is a problem with Baseball players nowadays.  Alot of them don't run to the base, when they pop it up or hit a ground ball to an infielder. You never know if that defensive player will make a mistake.  You should always run to every base no matter what happens.  The Bluejays coach should of got on Bautista's butt for not running to first base.

, who cares!   played high school ball and am smart enough to make a comment like that!  College ball is so different you better play your ass off to get somewhere.  Pro-Ball is an all different game.  you are already there, getting paid and are making a good living playing a game.  In Bautista's defense, he is not the only one to ever do this and it's acceptable.  Danks should not have called him out as he is the one that sucked that day and started jabbing at him.

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

this whole this is just stupid.  its called being a competitor.  so bautista was upset that he popped out, big deal.  anyone whose ever played a sport and has a competitive bone in thier body has done the same thing.  what i love is all the fools on  her bashing him.  the best ones are the former athletes who are doing so.  you were the former teammates i had that always frustrated me back when i played.  id rather play with someone who shows emotion and gave 100% each day than the i dont seem to really care type of player.  oh well to each his own.  further more,  let me ask you a question.  so its okay for a pitcher to yell and swear after they give up a homerun or don't  get a call??? that happens all the time.  its the competitive nature of the game

what is wrong with athletes who play at the top level of their respective sport?  where they all so babied there entire careers that they cant play the game without whining about something.  danks you suck this year so shut your mouth and do your job.  shouldn't you be upset about giving up so many runs so fast rather then a guy spiking his bat.

so tired of these ungodly contracts and baby players.  i hope the nfl owners win this battle cause the last thing we need is players controlling the league in all aspects in the future.  bunch of cry baby millionaires who forgot how to play the game for the love of the game and only care about the all mighty dollar.  sometimes i wish they would get rid of these overpaid athletes and let the minors play for awhile at least they would appreciate what they have.

p.s. if you are worried about being shown up play better and you wont have to worry about.

lol-- Sorry gents--What Baustista did IS disespectful...  Danks is right.  You don't miss a pitch and act like you should have hit it 400 feet..  I pictched at the college level (nothing special) and was having some shoulder issues (ended up being a torn labrum). I was pitching in summer league game and was definitely not throwing the ball all that well.  A kid who was barely big enough to hold a bat popped up a pitch and threw a hissy fit... THe next time he came up I sat him down and no one in the dugout (or the umpires) made a peep.  It was kinda funny because he popped up, looked at me then to the dugout-to-me-to-dugout....  sorry to rant here but a BIG part of what baseball is is mutual respect.. No offense to Bautista but he was a utility player before last year, and not that it's right even for the best of the best, he needs to tone it down.  Just my opinion...

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

Danks is like a teacher in the summer... no class. With his talent, or lack thereof, he's lucky he got him out.

As fopr Baujtista corking his bat, didn't Mythbusters prove it makes the ball travel less? Yea, corked bat my butt.

Danks also said the White Sox where the team to beat in February....... maybe the guy should focus less on talking to the press and more on pitching.

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

Bautista did nothing wrong and anyone who thinks he did is a moron.  Danks needs to shut his pie hole and take his bad results out on himself.  As for the Chicago announcers, well they are the most annoying roundmouth homers to ever call a baseball game.  I know die hard Sux fans that can't stand douchebag Harrelson and stupid ass home run calls.  The guy is a hypocrite and no one appreciates a one sided view when listening to a baseball game being called.
