Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

John Danks

By C. Trent Rosecrans

White Sox starter John Danks -- he of the 0-8 record and 5.25 ERA -- called Jose Bautista -- he of the 20 home runs -- a "clown" on Sunday.

Danks, who allowed six runs in the first inning of Sunday's 13-4 loss to the Blue Jays, was upset after Bautista popped up a 3-2 pitch for the second out of the Blue Jays' three-run fourth inning. Bautista tossed his bat, apparently upset with himself, and jogged toward first as the ball was caught.

See the play here -- and listen to the White Sox announcers unsurprisingly take Danks' side.

As Bautista headed back to the dugout, Danks had some words for baseball's best player of the season.

"I just told him to run the bases. He was out there acting like a [expletive] clown. I told him to run the bases," Danks told reporters, including the National Post. "He's a good player. He's had a great year and a half, no doubt, He's one of the best players in the league. He was out there acting like he's Babe Ruth or something. That's horse [stuff], I think"

Danks added, "He isn't that good to be acting like he needs to hit every ball out of the ballpark. That's just the way I feel. I have pride. I really do. I've had a pretty crappy year to this point, but I still have pride and I'm not going to let him sit out there and show me up like that. I just told him to run the bases and quit acting like a clown."

The thing is, nobody would have noticed had Danks not called attention to it. Players get upset with themselves all the time, spiking a bat his hardly something unique to Bautista. At that point, Danks maybe should've been happy he actually retired Bautista -- or any batter since he was trailing 9-2.

Here's Bautista's side:

"I was upset at missing a pitch, at myself," Bautista said. "If he took it the wrong way, I'm sorry, but I'm not here to make him feel good.

"It really doesn't matter to me what he thought. What I'm not going to allow is when I'm running by him, him yelling at me again, so I yelled back at him."

The Post also said White Sox announcer Ken Harrelson suggest on-air that Bautista was corking his bat -- he also admonished Bautista on-air about the incident with Danks. And then the announcer made a trip to the Blue Jays' clubhouse after the game, which writer John Lott described thusly:  "Harrelson made a special trip to the Toronto clubhouse after the game and fawningly introduced himself to Bautista. The two chatted for a few minutes. Apparently, the content of Bautista’s bat did not come up."

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

Great comment Skyline. Danks should have been thankful he got Bautista out and not be worried about anything else. Roy Halladay is having a great year, can you imagine him confronting Bautista in a similar way? No, because Halladay is too worried about his own job to be running his mouth. So Danks and his winless record should be thankful they're still in the majors instead of riding tour buses in the minors. So Mr. Danks, as The Rock would say, know your role and shut your mouth.

And I lol'd at your 'special visit' comment, Sky. That really is something. Hawk, that annoying, biased d-bag, must be so naive that he still thinks he's playing. What a smacked ass. If I were a player and Hawk tried to intimidate me, I'd punch him in the colon and leave him in a crumpled heap.

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

Danks is just a sore loser and a whiner.  Bautista did nothing wrong and Danks was just angry and frustrated at his awful performance and his awful season.  And as for that arrogant loser Hawk Harrelson, he should keep his mouth shut.  It is not his place to accuse Jose of anything, or make a "special visit" to the Jays clubhouse to talk to him.  Rediculous.

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

Danks just flat out sucks. Bautista was acting like a clown considering the situation of his team up 9-2. Bautista should have just run the bases and Danks should have kept his mouth shut. A couple of clowns.

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

99% of the time, play-the-game-right-scolds are screening poor performance or lack of ability.  This is the crap great players like Richie Allen had to endure, and the time to declare it BS has certainly come.  Danks got spanked and ought to give thanks he even ranks in a league like Bautista.

Better to act like a clown once than pitch like one the entire season.

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

Danks needs to worry about his W/L record and ERA instead of how Bautista runs the bases ! Bautista is a better than me because me and danks would have a meeting and danks would not have liked the end results !

Danks says Bautista 'acting like a clown'

First of all, I am a Red Sox fan so I speak with no bias, I agree with Danks, I feel that in todays game with guys throwing temper tantrums and disrespecting the game is killing it. Its too bad there arent more guys like Danks out there who arent afraid to voice their displeasure with they way these grown men pout. It reminds me of Dallas Braden telling Alex Rodriguez to not walk across his mound, and Carlton Fisk getting in Deion Sanders' face for drawing a dollar sign in the batters box. Best part about that story is that Pudge got in Sanders' face as he didnt run out a pop up. Its simple, have respect for the game ballplayers, every youngster out there is watching and they will copy what you do.

CSN has the biggest "homer" announcers in baseball. I think I have heard every colour crew out there and none even come close to this. I couldn't care less, and even laugh a bit when they say things like "the good guys coming up" and wish balls to go foul. So its not surprising that they immediatly took Danks' side.
