Gerrit ColeBy C. Trent Rosecrans

It looks as if the Pirates will take UCLA right-hander Gerrit Cole with the No. 1 pick in Monday's first round of the MLB Draft, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic reports.

Cole had been seen by many as the top prospect available, but it wasn't as clear-cut as it had been the last two seasons when the Nationals took Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg.

Cole is 6-8 with a 3.31 ERA for the Bruins this season, striking out 119 in 114 1/3 innings, walking 24. Despite his good, but not great numbers, he throws 100 mph and stands 6-foot-4, 220 pounds and has no injury history.

The Yankees took Cole with their first-round pick in 2008, 28th overall. Instead, he chose to go to UCLA.

Friday, I took a look at nine other names you should know for Monday's first round of the draft.

Most expect the Mariners, with the No. 2 pick, to take a position player. That will likely be Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon -- or they could surprise and take Kansas high school outfielder Bubba Starling.

The Diamondbacks pick third and seventh, in what may be their most important draft in years.

Report: Pirates to take Cole No. 1

Until the Pirates manage a winning season, you might as well ditch the "young team" "up and coming team" talk.  Getting more than 3 fans at a game would help too.

Another poster that knows zilch about Pittsburgh sports but makes comments like he knows what he's talking about. So last night the Pirates beat the Phillies, AGAIN. And had a record crowd for PNC Park. Close too 40,000 fans attended the game. Alot of Phillies fans in from Phlly also helped a bit. So I guess the Pirates FINALLY got more than 3 people  at the game?

And it was a Phillies fan also. So I guess the big Phillies fan doesn't watch his Phillies, right? Or he might know better than too look like a moron! Bucs getting out the brooms today?

Gerrit Cole is the best player in this years MLB draft. This won't be the last #1 pick for the Pirates no matter what even with a stud player like Cole on there team.

Is it just me or is the new york yankees mystique a thing of the past!??!
It's not just you.  And it started before Cliff Lee snubbed them for Philadelphia.  Every year Yankees fans make post after post about how "the Yankees will get X player because they're the Yankees and they get who they want."  Those are the fans who thought the Yankees 2011 rotation would include Felix Hernandez, Zach Grienke, and Cliff Lee.

OK so besides all the Yankee bashing, and let's remember that the good ole Red Sucks are the new leaders in the free agent sign everone you can market, not the Yankees.
Sometimefan may want to spend more time being a fan and less time repeating nonsense.  Look at the payroll moves the Red Sox made in the offseason, and compare Boston and New York payrolls before making dumb posts.

He finishes with "no the Pitt Bucks".  What the hell does that even mean??
Well, I believe he left a "t" off of the "no" and meant "not the Pitt Bucks", a play on Pittsburgh money and Bucs, short for Buccaneers.  Just my humble attempt to be diplomatic.

6-8...3+ ERA...guess that 100mph fastball didn't fool too many batters...can't wait for my buccos to 'xplain this one away...at least in Pittsburgh he won't have to play in front of more people that he did in college (except when the phillies are in town)

You are an idiot who obviously doesn't know anything about the Pittsburgh Pirates of today. The Pirates have one of the best young teams in baseball and will only get better. The Pirates just came off a streak of 13 consecutive games where their startes only gave up 2 runs or less. They are 27-29 and have one of the best pitching staffs in the league to date, yeah man they really effin suck, not! The Pirates are only going to get better from here on out.
