Anderson to see Dr. Andrews about elbow

Earlier this week, A's starting pitcher Brett Anderson said he feared he would have to have the dreaded Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow. No announcement has been made just yet, but it doesn't sound promising. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Anderson had an MRI and the team has seen results but doesn't want to make any announcements until it gets a second opinion. The second opinion will be that of renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who routinely performs Tommy John surgeries.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves because it's obviously not a done deal. However, if you were building a court case based upon circumstantial evidence, you'd have: Anderson fearing he needs Tommy John, a noticable drop in velocity from the beginning of the season, a 2.84 ERA jumping all the way up to 4.00 in just two starts and now a visit to Dr. Andrews.

Draw whatever conclusions you'd like, but I'd be surprised if Anderson heard good news within the next few days.
