Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia isn't in the lineup Thursday night against the Yankees. He left New York to go back to Boston for a knee examination -- he injured it in mid-May, and the worry was that he'd need surgery -- but Red Sox fans can breathe easy. The examination showed only a bruised knee cap. Pedroia is expected to be in the lineup for the Red Sox Friday (Sean McAdam via Twitter).

Pedroia, 27, is a three-time All-Star who won the AL Rookie of the Year in 2007 and was the MVP the following season. He's having the worst year of his career this season, hitting just .247 with a .699 OPS (his career marks are .299 and .817). He was only able to play 75 games last season due to injury.

Pedroia doesn't need surgery

hope he can now rebound and go forward.  Its funny they lock him up for big money (not that big) and he becomes hurt.  meanwhile elsbury is getting paid nothing and misses a yr.  now its his walk yr and hes crushing the ball playing everyday.  look at mets  reyes cant stay in the field  for more than 120 gms   beltran  is hurt for a yr and a half ALL OF A SUDDEN THEIR WALK YRS THEYRE HONUS WAGNER AND JOE DIMAGGIO!!!! and next yr......same old players.  anybody who'd sign reyes beltran to big money long term is an idiot.  when they change collective bargaining to include non guaranteed contracts and escape clauses for owners its stupid to sign these idiots.

Pedroia doesn't need surgery

Pedroia should get a second opinion from his own private doctor(s), like Dice-K did. If nothing changes and he continues to play like he's playing, it's not a big help to the line-up. I don't know why Francona keeps automatically insisting that his players won't need surgery and won't miss time. He represents the management, and stuff like that doesn't exactly make him - and, by extension, them - sound impartial.

A bruised knee cap can be very painful to play with. Isn't thst the injury that made Carlos Beltran ineffective for a whole year for the Mets? I hope it goes better for Pedroia.

Hope he can rebound and get the batting average back on track... Red Sox need everyone in the line up to keep up the pace and stay ahead of the Rays and the Dipsticks in Pinstripes.
