Earlier Sunday, CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler reported 80-year-old Jack McKeon might be named the Marlins interim manager, in the wake of Edwin Rodriguez's resignation Sunday morning. Knobler has now learned that McKeon will indeed take over, beginning Monday.

McKeon becomes the second-oldest manager in major-league history, as the legendary Connie Mack was the A's skipper in 1950 at age 87.

The Marlins have lost 10 consecutive games and are a dreadful 1-18 in June, but McKeon's turned teams around before. In fact, he took over the 2003 Marlins after a 16-22 start and went 75-49 the rest of the way, then going on to win the World Series.

McKeon first managed all the way back in 1973 and last managed in 2005. His career record is 1,011-940. He's a two-time NL Manager of the Year, though he's never won a division.

The well is dry.
What well is that?  Last I checked, Hanley Ramirez and Josh Johnson are two of the best players in baseball and are both only 27, we have the 2009 ROY in Coghlan, and the Stanton/Morrison/Sanchez trio were all rookies last year.

Samson and Beinfest select Jack McKeon.  He was a buck private during the Civil War.
Look at you, you're so clever.  How old does Jack McKeon need to be to walk out to the pitching mound, set the lineup, and decide when to pull starters?  Do you know what an interim manager is?

There's no one in New Orleans or Jacksonville who can coach or play in the bigs.
I don't know why there would be.  The Marlins have called up 4 of their top prospects in the last 2 seasons.  And then there's that Matt Dominguez guy, who's one of Baseball America's top 100 prospects.  But there's no way he can play in the bigs.

This franchise is in absolute despair.
If by absolute despair you mean very bright immediate future as long as Loria stops being cheap once the Marlins move next year then yes, the franchise is in absolute despair.

A new stadium isn't going to change it either.
Yes, it will.  Those Sunday afternoon games you referenced will have fans in the seats, and people won't have to worry about the rain so they won't be afraid to bring the kids out on a weeknight.  If there's a roof, you won't have a rain delay any longer than the 30 minutes it takes for the roof to actually close.

But of course, if you had any idea what you were talking about you might know some of this already.  Learn facts, then post.

Trader Jack:

Great choice to finish out the year.  Saw him recently at a function and he is still sharp as a tack.  My thoughts is that those two shyters from New York, Lurie and Samson, screwed with the chemistry of the team when they fired Malee.  This wasnt Edwins fault, this team went into a funk when Johnson went down, Malee was fired and Lauries pet Ramieriz went into the tank.  .204 batting average 4 or 5 home runs from Your star doesnt cut it.  Hanley cost Gonzalez his job because Laurie held Hanleys hand when he wasnt hustling.  I just wonder how the taxpayers in Miami are going to pay for that stadium after the first three seasons.  The Marlins drew 3 million in their inaugural year.  the two shysters will have prices so high that the average family will not be able to afford to go.  Just look at the HEAT attendance.

The Marlins are only 7.5 games out of the wild card, so they're not done yet. They have the players to contend with any team in the national league, but they need Johnson back in the rotation and they need to get rid of vazquez.

Jack McKeon was and is a great manager. The problem is father time. Casey Stengel a great manager was a pitiful sight as manager of the Mets in the 60's. I hate to see a manager or player go to the post too many times. Not sure Jack can salvage the Marlin wreckage this time. The Marlins need a total make over from the owner down. Othewise their team is doomed and probably on the way out of south Florida.

The well is dry.  Geez, besides having no 4th and 5th man in the rotation, Samson and Beinfest select Jack McKeon.  He was a buck private during the Civil War.  I don't know how much more hope I can place with the Marlins.  I go to 15-20 games a year.  I've sat on Wed nights and Sun afternoons where the announced crowd is 14k and change yet I can count no more than 1,000.  There's no one in New Orleans or Jacksonville who can coach or play in the bigs.  This franchise is in absolute despair.  A new stadium isn't going to change it either.  As I look back, San Antonio wasn't such a bad idea.

I'm afraid it's not 2003 Marlins fans. Don't think Jack is going to get them back to the World Series, though the Marlins are due. 5 years the first time, 6 years to the 2nd title.

How many teams can put a goal to win as many games as the manager's age and say it was a successful season???????????
