Mark Ellis

By C. Trent Rosecrans

The Rockies have found their solution at second baseman, getting Mark Ellis and cash from the A's in exchange for right-hander Bruce Billings and a player to be named.

Colorado has been searching for a second baseman since the offseason when the team tried to get Michael Young from the Rangers. Instead, they've gone with a mixture of Jonathan Herrera, Chris Nelson, Jose Lopez, Alfredo Amezaga and Eric Young Jr. Rockies second basemen have hit .236/.291/.319 through 80 games this season.

Ellis came off the disabled list last week only to see the emergence of rookie Jemile Weeks, who had gone from the team's second baseman of the future to its second baseman of the present in the time Ellis' 15 days on the DL for a strained right hamstring were used up.

Ellis is hitting .217/.253/.290 in 233 plate appearances this season, but should get a boost from playing at Coors Field.

The $1 million sent from Oakland will be used to cover some of what remains of Ellis' $6 million salary for this season. He is a free agent after this season. Ellis had a partial no-trade clause in his contract.

Billings, 25, has appeared in one game this season, allowing five hits and a run in two innings. He was 6-2 with a 4.47 ERA in 29 games and 50 1/3 innings for Triple-A Colorado Springs this season.

Well, this was a long time coming. Jemile Weeks, in the short time he's been up from AAA has proven to be Athletics' future. He will be more of a tablesetter and as proven that from the get go. Mark, thanks for your contribution throughout the years with the Athletics. As I stated in earlier posts, your time was going to come up once Weeks got his chance because the Athletics was certainly not let a number one draft pick sit on the bench and wait his turn. This is a good move for both the Rockies and the Athletics.

Brainy Billy Beane knows what he's doing.  Brainy Billy is always right, even when it looks like he's dead wrong.  Look at all the league pennants and World Series he's won!  Look at the offensive juggernaut he's built!  Look at his team's always-lofty place in the standings in the Mighty AL West!  Billy is the smartest man alive--just ask him!

If only the Rockies would give Eric Young or Chris Nelson realistic opportunities to become the everyday 2B like the A's just did for Weeks.

good move for the rockies.  ellis with thrive in denver.  i'm sure a's fans won't miss him since he aparantly sucks and because the a's are so good---not.  i don't follow the a's but i checked and they are in forth place in the worst division in baseball--so they're obviously done for this year.  time to dump qualitiy players they cannot afford to keep.  oakland's loss in colorado's gain.  i hope billings and the player to be named are able to help them get out of the basement.

I like it.  Let the youngster play.  He has earned it thus far.  Ellis time to go bud.  We need a change.  At least its a start.  One thing for sure Ellis had to go sooner or later.

Damn A's...we don't need more pitching but Offense players who can play in line-up today!!  I am glad we got rid of Mark cuz he is old and sux this year but for a pitcher!!??  Don't make sense!
Sure it does; the A's just made $2 million dollars. Billings will be 'organizational depth', somebody to fill out a minor league rotation and either get called up if he does really well, or traded, or left to finish out his career in the minors. The Rockies probably gave the A's a list of career minor-leaguers to choose from, and there weren't any decent hitters on it.

It's pretty arguable to call Ellis the "solution" to the Rockies' second base position with that .217/.253/.290 slash line. Oakland's field is a pitchers' park but that offensive output would be awful on any field. At least Ellis is a defensive upgrade, and now the Rockies' management won't have to worry anymore about how to spend that extra $2 million they just committed.
