Red Sox place Lester on DL

The Red Sox have placed left-hander Jon Lester on the 15-day disabled list with a strained back muscle.

Lester left Tuesday's game after no-hitting the Blue Jays for four innings. While Lester says the move was precautionary more than anything, the Red Sox love to exercise caution whenever a pitcher even whispers about something bothering him. Given the looming All-Star Break, placing Lester on the DL may only knock him out for one or two starts.

“Jon Lester had an MRI today which confirmed the diagnosis of a latissimus strain," Red Sox medical director Tom Gill said in a statement. "He will be treated with a period of rest from throwing, followed by progressive strengthening program. There is no specific timeframe for his return at this time. His status will be better defined following the All-Star break.”

Lester will be eligible to return on July 20, the day after he was slated for a turn in the rotation. He could simply start on the 20th in Baltimore with Aceves making a second start on the 19th as a bridge to Lester. However, it would surprise no one if the Red Sox delayed things until the 22nd, the first game of a homestand against the Mariners.

Alfredo Aceves will take the ball Sunday against the Orioles, in Lester's place, while reliever Scott Atchinson has been summoned from Pawtucket for his third stint with the squad.

Dr. Gill also released the following statement on Lester's fellow injured starting pitcher Clay Buchholz: “Clay Buchholz was seen in consultation by Dr. Craig Brigham today in Charlotte. Dr. Brigham agreed with the team's assessment that the back symptoms can be treated with rehabilitation. Clay will be advanced in his activities as his symptoms allow.”

It's amazing how the Sox never seem to skip a beat when the injury bug hits.  Terry Francona did by far, his best job in Boston last year.  They still managed to go 89-73 with Beckett, Pedroia, Youkilis, and Ellsbury all missing significant time.  That is the core of that team.  Never lose faith Sox fans.  And everyone else should be nervous that they are still hanging around with the third best record in baseball...

Too bad he was taken out after a 4 inning no hit bid?  You know how many pitchers go the first 4 innings of a game without giving up a hit?  A lot....

Good luck without him in the rotation....you'll need all the help you can get.  He will be out a month at the minimum!

Interesting how Beckett has been the most durable Red Sox pitcher this year.  Lester will benefit from this DL stint, only lose a few starts, and still have a chance for 20 wins.  Also gives Wakefield, Aceves and some of the young guys waiting in the wings some starts.  As long as the Sox keep hitting the ball and the bullpen performs the team will still win and weather this latest injury to a starter.  The shame of yesterday's situation was it was a no hitter at the point Lester went out.  Too bad it wasn't after the 5th and he got another W.
