Hamilton talks about accident

It's likely words can't express what Josh Hamilton is going through right now. I know I can't imagine what it would feel like to toss a ball up to a fan as a nice gesture and have a freak accident result in a death. Even though it's not even remotely his fault, it feels like one of those things anyone would second-guess forever. Hamilton spoke to the media before Friday night's game against the A's, and he seems to be in as good a place as he could possibly be. All quotes that follow are from Hamilton himself, via the Star-Telegram.

"Behind me I heard someone say 'Hey Hamilton, how about the next one.' I turned around and Stone was the first guy I saw sitting there with his son. I gave him a nod, and I got the next one and threw it in that direction. I just remember it happened in slow motion. Obviously, as soon as it happened, I couldn't help but think about what was happening behind that fence."

On reaching out to the Stone family: "Absolutely. I haven't yet. I'm going to give this situation time to, you hate to think sink in, but I can't imagine what they're going through right now. I can't imagine. All I can think about is praying for them and knowing that God has a plan. You don't always know what that plan is when those things happen, but you will."

On what his night was like when he went home: "She (his wife Katie) stayed up with me and talked with me and gave me some encouragement and support. She was there to talk to me if I needed to. The kids stayed up to talk to me for a while. It was just hard for me, hearing the little boy screaming for his daddy after he had fallen, and then being home with my kids really hit home last night."

There's a full transcript on Star-Telegram.com, but the basic gist is that Hamilton's obviously going through a rough time -- likely not near as much as those close to Stone, but it would still be rough.

Hamilton talks about accident

If there is any doubt in anyone's mind about whether the human race is worth trying to preserve or not,all you have to do is read some of the posts here and you know that a lot of it isn't.

I'm going to stick up for God here.

Josh, it wasn't "God's Plan" for a father to have a fatal fall in front of his son.  If it was, then God is cruel.  I cannot believe that is the case.  Instead, we have free will to go wherever we want and random acts of tragedy do happen.  The father and his son happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Now that this tragedy has happened, God can carry the family and you through spiritually.

I just had to get that off my chest.

BrooklynDodger4 Could not have said it better.  If you are going to say something so stupid, don't say anything.  It was a terrible and tragic accident and no one should be blamed.  I am sure Josh Hamilton will be able to put this behind him and then be able to do something for the Stone family.  He is a class act and has gone through so much.  I offer my condolences to the Stone family and hope they can move on.

This is a terrible freak accident. First, I wish the Stone family the best in coping with their loss. Second, I hope that Hamilton and any other players affected by this can get the help that they need. Finally, I hope that Baseball sees this as exactly what it was, a freak accident. Don't change the way players interract with fans!!! Balls should be thrown into the stands, fans should reach for them and battle a bit for the ball. Its part of baseball!!!

Hamilton talks about accident

I just got done reading this story and all the comments. It is a horrible tragedy and you only hope that all involved will eventually get through this. My post is directed to 2 of the other posts. REDSOXFAN you are an a**hole and a f**king embarassment to the human race and that is coming from another Red Sox fan. You are a classless piece of s**t!!! You should rot in hell. To njdx, if your brain was dynamite, you couldn't blow yourself up. Who gives a crap about your fantasy baseball team. Maybe, when something tragic happens in your life, you will finally understand. But I doubt it!! I am glad I don't know either of you. The 2 of you should get together, since both of you are made for each other.

I truly hope that the boy and his whole family, Josh Hamilton, the Texas Rangers, and the Oakland A's bullpen will eventually be able to put this terrible event behind them. It is going to take a long time and may never happen. You are all in my prayers.

This Red Sox fan says to the so-called Sox fan: you are an inhuman cretin!

There's no-one at the moment, outside the Stone family, who's having a harder time with this than Josh Hamilton, and he isn't responsible in any legal or moral way.

REDSOX FAN, you are a heartless idiot. CBS should ban you from ever being able to post something so stupid. You should be put in jail. I think Hamilton feels bad enough without having morons like you blaming him. Think before you post next time.

Very poor taste RedSox fan.  This was a freak accident, and a very sad situation.  No one is at fault and shame on you for blaming Josh Hamilton.  He was trying to do a good thing and it just ended up with a bad result.  Very, very sad.  RIP, and Godspeed.

Did you see that lined shot he hit that nailed a fan tonight?? He had that look on his face as if to say "are you kidding me?" No reaction time on that liner, but I think that fan is alright. Medical attention was called for, but everyone turned out fine.
