Ex-Rays prospect Cristian Vasquez Martinez was caught trying to smuggle six pounds of cocaine into New York last month, Customs and Border Protection officers announced Wednesday, as Metro.us reports.

Officials said Martinez  was caught with cocaine shoved into the soles of four pairs of sneakers, the very same in the photo on the right, courtesy Metro.us. Martinez pitched in the Rays system in the Dominican Republic before being released in June for poor performance, a team spokesman said. Martinez had been caught in a random search when officials noticed his shoes were "unusually heavy," John Saleh of the New York field office of Customs and Border Protection said.

It's safe to say you'll never hear of Martinez again in professional baseball.

This is of course a silly thing to say. If he has no talent, he won't be heard of, of course, but if he reveals that he can indeed play the game (assuming he gets a chance to reveal that) all will be forgiven and he'll be in the Bigs in no time.

Hamilton didn't smuggle drugs, did he? He just used them. So no comparison.

1.) I was going to make a Josh Hamilton joke but you let the air out of the bag. Thanks a lot, Bones.

2.) This post didn't mention it, but anything involving pro sports and feet or footwear has to be linked to Rex Ryan somehow.

3.) I appreciate the myriad potential humor derived from this story but I follow Baseball America & Scouting Book pretty closely and I can't recall a Cristian Vasquez Martinez ever being considered a prospect. He did have some pretty cool kicks, though.

Read the article.  This guy is from the Dominican Republic, whose players aren't in the draft system.  Teams sign bunches of kids and thin the ranks without ever bringing them to the USA.  That's all this guy was.

That's what I call stepping on it before you get rid of it.  But he won't  have to worry about that.
