Third baseman Placido Polanco has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with lower back inflammation, retroactive to July 5, the Phillies announced Friday. As a corresponding move, the Phillies activated closer Ryan Madson.

Polanco, 35, is hitting .274 with 34 runs scored and a .331 OBP. He was voted in as the NL starter at third base in the All-Star Game, but was unable to play because of his injury.

Madson has been sidelined since June 18 with a hand contusion. He has 15 saves with a 2.03 ERA.

Also, Vance Worley was recalled from Triple-A and will start Friday night against he Mets. The young pitcher is 4-1 with a 2.20 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 10 appearances, including eight starts.

Getting the extra start in in minors makes sense. My bad.

Correct, the plan is to keep Worley on his start schedule so they sent him down for the All Star break otherwise he wouldn't have started a game in almost 10 days...I think they are playing him perfectly...yes, it sucks to keep coming up and going back down but I really think he is going to be a decent starter for us, and yes, better than Kendrick.

They aren't toying with Worley. They planned this to keep his rest consistent and keep him in the rotation.

Phils have had so many injuries because the average age on the roster is 45. Why do they keep toying with this Worley kid sending him up and down? He has been a great spot starter, better than Kendrick, and is far more valuable than Baez. Keep him in bigs and let him play.

I think's kinda interesting though, he is on the DL retro to July 15th, so really he is out until July 20th or 5 days from now, right? But when he does come back does he get a rehab assignment in reading, clearwater, or Leheigh Valley? He wasn't help the team that much offensively since May so he needs to get better and hopefully he will. The brighter side is that Michael Martinez has looked pretty good as of late. Batting .883 in the last 7 days.

gopack - as a Phils fan, you hit the nail on the head.  It has been all about pitching for us this year.  We have also had a few timely hits.  The Phils and Braves are built similarly, and I really think that who wins the divison will come down to who is healthier in the 2nd half and which offense picks it up a notch.  I see the wild card definitely coming from one of these two teams.  Good luck the rest of the way!
