Pence to Pirates is hot new trade rumor

By Matt Snyder

As the Ubaldo Jimenez speculation fire continues to burn, we now have our next hot trade rumor: The Pirates have scouted Hunter Pence (PittsburghLive.com). Pence is hitting .321 with 11 homers, 61 RBI and an .852 OPS. He also has a great throwing arm, as we saw in the All-Star Game.

Now, just as with the Jimenez talk, let's not get carried away here. Scouting a player doesn't mean the teams have exchanged names or will ever talk about a trade. It's just the first of many steps. Still, this could make sense for both teams.

The best argument for the Astros to keep Pence is that they need to rebuild around someone and he's their obvious best player. You can say he's young, but he's 28. The Astros aren't anywhere near contention, so he could be 31 (or older) before they're ready to make a run at the NL Central again. Why not deal him and get a big prospect package back? I feel like that would make more sense, because the likes of Carlos Lee and Brett Myers aren't landing much in return at this point. Pence and Wandy Rodriguez are the ones who need to be moved in an effort to start the rebuilding process.

As for the Pirates, first of all, it's pretty cool to see them as buyers. Variety can be good and the Pirates fans have suffered for quite a while. But let's talk baseball.

There are more pressing needs than right field for the Pirates. Shortstop and third base are weak -- unless Pedro Alvarez all of a sudden is promoted and explodes -- and Lyle Overbay could be upgraded at first. A catcher upgrade would help, though there aren't really many, if any, good ones available. Some extra help in middle relief couldn't hurt either. But if the Pirates could get a star like Pence, it would enable them to move Garrett Jones to first and it does strengthen the lineup as a whole in a pretty big way. Plus, Pence still has a decent chunk of his prime left and the Pirates' cornerstones would be a duo of outfield stars with Pence and Andrew McCutchen.

So, yes, this feels like a move that could benefit both teams, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen or is in the works. Just a rumor, for now.

Brave's may go after him if Chipper Jones is hurt worse than we know. Prado to 3rd, Pence to fill in the outfield.

> Where is Taillon or Allie?

In single A, getting whacked around regularly...

If the Astros are going to move Pence, they are going to be looking for guys who are ready in the near term, not in the next 5 years.  I don't see them trading for anything but AAA prospects.

And yes, if asked, I would add Taillon or Allie to the pot.  I would take a definite for a maybe in a second!!

Pence to Pirates is hot new trade rumor

I would rather see the Pirates look down into the MLB Farm teams and find a prospect thats excelling.  Take a look at Tyler Moore with the Harrisburg Senators.  The Bucs need 1st Base help, this kid big, strong, good hands and hits the long ball.  Washington already has first basement up the wazzoo so they don't need the kid there.  We could really use a 3 or 4 team deal to move Oglebay, Doumit, Synder and Harrison.

The team is young and Moore would fit right in.

Pence would be awesome, but I'd be surprised to see this materialize into anything other than talk.  As awesome as it would be to finally see the Pirates import a Tier One guy like Pence for a change rather than watch them farm out some of our homegrown talent as we've been known to do over the years (Bay, Kendall, Nady, McClouth, etc), I think for the kind of money we'd be shelling out, it'd make more sense to pursue a long term deal in a more troubled area than RF.  I'd really like to see the Bucco's reach a deal with a 3rd baseman for my money's worth.  A catcher would be nice, but as previously stated, those options are limited (and that's putting it mildly).  Pablo Sandoval anyone?

I think the Pirate's 3 best prospects are Brad Lincoln, Starling Marte, and Alex Presley.  I wouldn't think twice about trading all 3 of them for Hunter Pence, the guy is outstanding!  I would even throw in Josh Harrison.  This gives you an excellent major league ball player.  I just do not see "losing" on a trade for Pence, he is that good!

I would then trade Diaz and Overbay for some single A and double A prospects to restock what was lost.

I can't tell you how juiced I would be about seeing Pence in a Pirates uniform.  The city of Pittsburgh would treat him like royalty, and from his comments, he sounds like he would be very open to coming here.  I am excited!!
