Pirates officially 'disappointed' by call

Pirates president Frank Connelly has released a statement about the end of Tuesday night's Pirates-Braves game:

“The Pittsburgh Pirates organization is extremely disappointed by the way its 19-inning game against the Atlanta Braves ended earlier this morning. The game of baseball and this game in particular, filled with superlative performances by players on both clubs, deserved much better. We have filed a formal complaint with the Commissioner.

“While we cannot begin to understand how Umpire Jerry Meals did not see the tag made by Michael McKenry three feet in front of home plate, we do not question the integrity of Mr. Meals. Instead, we know that Mr. Meals’ intention was to get the call right. Jerry Meals has been umpiring Major League games for 14 years and has always done so with integrity and professionalism. He got this one wrong.

“For Pirates fans, we may have lost a game in the standings as a result of a missed call but this game, and the gutsy performances by so many of our players, will make us stronger, more unified and more determined as we continue the battle for the National League Central Division.”

Pirates officially 'disappointed' by call

If it was the 6th inning I think the ump would of called him out. But I think he wanted to go home. He wanted to go home so bad he thought that swipe tag was close enough to call it a miss and go home.

Meals totally blew the call.  Long game, late night, fatigue, etc. you can make all the excuses you want HE BLEW IT! The Braves may have won anyway...but we will never know because of this terrible mistake.  What is also regretable is that Meals will never admit that he blew it.  Unlike Jim Joyce whose blown call cost Gallaraga the perfect game.  Joyce at least was man enough to admit he was wrong.  Umpires do get it right 99.9% of the time but what upsets so many fans is that they can't admit when they do screw up.

Do you want to know how I KNOW the tag was made.  Julio Lugo and his reaction during the play.  After the tag was made by Michael McKenry, Lugo just stood there like a man who was just tagged out. Then the second Meals flashed the safe sign, a surprised Lugo quickly reached back and touched the plate with his foot.  He looked like a guy who got an extra $20 bill out of the ATM, quickly grabbed it, and made his way out of there before anyone started asking questions.

Its a shame because the Pirates and Braves both played a hell of a game.  It's like Armando Galarraga's perfect game all over again.

Okay, heres a question... does anyone know what happened in the 18.5 innings before that call? the Braves were getting jobbed all night on calls, even had 2 people ejected and Meals tried to bait Christain Martinez into arguing... but you dont hear about that... you just hear about how the poor Pirates got screwed...

The point is the catchers arm swings through freely, non obstructed and would have been something if tagged him. Why didn't he just block the plate and make him run into him?? 95% of all catchrs would do that! Call was accurate
