Pirates officially 'disappointed' by call

By C. Trent Rosecrans

Pirates president Frank Connelly has released a statement about the end of Tuesday night's Pirates-Braves game:

“The Pittsburgh Pirates organization is extremely disappointed by the way its 19-inning game against the Atlanta Braves ended earlier this morning. The game of baseball and this game in particular, filled with superlative performances by players on both clubs, deserved much better. We have filed a formal complaint with the Commissioner.

“While we cannot begin to understand how Umpire Jerry Meals did not see the tag made by Michael McKenry three feet in front of home plate, we do not question the integrity of Mr. Meals. Instead, we know that Mr. Meals’ intention was to get the call right. Jerry Meals has been umpiring Major League games for 14 years and has always done so with integrity and professionalism. He got this one wrong.

“For Pirates fans, we may have lost a game in the standings as a result of a missed call but this game, and the gutsy performances by so many of our players, will make us stronger, more unified and more determined as we continue the battle for the National League Central Division.”

Pirates officially 'disappointed' by call

Good or bad call, I don't care.  I am in favor of instant replay for baseball to be judged by a professional in a private replay booth.  I am even more in support of an electronic ball/strike creation, the technology is there.  You would still need all the umpires but ball calls continue to irritate me when I know there is a better way.

i stand corrected... but seriously, this is not the first blown call to cost a team a game... people need to accept it and move on, anyone that keeps using this as a crutch obviously doesn't know much about baseball

Pirates officially 'disappointed' by call

I've watched this play over and over again. There is NO clear visual evidence that he was tagged. It certainly looks like he may have been tagged, but it also looks like the catcher's arm comes through the runners arms un-impeded. You can easily see why he made that call, and to lambast him for calling what you can't even dispute on super slow-mo replay is ludicrous.

Even if instant replay did exist (as so many analysts are suggesting would matter here), anyone who watches football would know that it would likely include some type of "clear indisputable evidence" to overturn a call. In my opinion there is no clear indisputable evidence, and the call would stand anyway!

Pirates fans should stop making a big deal out of this. You had 10 innings to get a run and you didn't get one. To blame this on an ump is ludicrous. This goes to show why Pirates fans deserve another 18 years of sub-.500 ball - they're just as classless as Steelers fans.

If the analyists on the major sports networks and websites cant even agree on whether he was safe or out, what makes you so sure? i admit, most people THINK we was out, but there is no 100% conclusive video or pictures

Also, there is no garuntee that the Pirates wouldn't have lost even if Lugo had been called out... and people taking shots at Meals family are completely out of line...

Your right we may have lost any how...but we may have won too! And if we did lose it didn't have to be this way!! Duhhhh
