Could MLB return to Montreal?

By C. Trent Rosecrans

The former French-language broadcaster for the Montreal Expos said he's been approached by a business group trying to bring baseball back to Montreal. That news comes off the heels of a report by the Conference Board of Canada that said Montreal could still support Major League Baseball.

The Expos moved to Washington D.C. after the 2004 season, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time a market lost a team and then got another. The Expos' move to D.C. was the third incarnation of MLB in the nation's capital. Kansas City, Seattle and Milwaukee all got second chances at MLB, and then there's the Mets who debuted after the Dodgers and Giants went west.

One huge hurdle would likely be a new ballpark, something the Expos couldn't get.

Still, Rodger Brulotte said there are business groups that have approached him and he's starting to take them seriously, even if he wouldn't name specific names.

"Before doing anything, I told the group to get their business plan together," Brulotte told the Montreal Gazette. "It has to include plans for a stadium, for radio and television rights, for everything, as though they already have the franchise."

It's unlikely baseball would expand anytime soon -- earlier this month in Phoenix commissioner Bud Selig said it's not in the plans -- but the Oakland A's are the team that would be most likely to move. The chances of that, though, are slim. Even with a stronger Canadian dollar, a return to Montreal seems even more unlikely -- much to the chagrin of traveling beat writers across the United States who fondly remember trips to Montreal, if not Olympic Stadium.

Author Jonah Keri, a Montreal native who is working on a book about the Expos, called the report a "non-story" and said there is a "zero percent" chance of baseball ever returning to Montreal. Unfortunately, he's probably correct.

Could MLB return to Montreal?

Montreal won't get, and probably shouldn't get, a new MLB in the near future if ever for a laundry list of reasons.  Attendance in the late 90s and early 00s rivaled slightly higher than what the Braves were drawing per game in the 70s and 80s, don't forget I think their final season the Expos drew more attendance for their games in Puerto Rico than they did in Montreal.  Selig played a large role in running the Expos out of town too.  It was just bad in the end from every imaginable aspect, not a fruitful endeavor in my mind.  A return of baseball in Montreal will about as meaningful as soccer is in the states-----sure it'll have its following but not enough for the majority of people to care about it.

Why not start out with a AAA team?  I don't know who would move, but if the Richmond team could move to Gwinnett, I suppose another AAA team might want to try Montreal.

Could MLB return to Montreal?

Seems to me that the most logical team to move to Montreal is Tampa Bay.  They're stadium sucks (worse than the Big O).  They have no fans, no matter how much they win.  They would create a "natural" rivalry with Toronto, being in the same division.  New York and Boston fans would probably prefer going to Montreal over Tampa.  We all know they are travelling fans.  And, Quebecers are very supportive if they know ownership is in with their hearts.  This isn't as crazy as it sounds.

Could MLB return to Montreal?

I think the four major sports need to adopt a new rule-NO SECOND CHANCES. If you lose a franchise, you can NEVER get another one. There are plenty of supportive cities who don't have ONE franchise to be giving loser cities second chances.

Could MLB return to Montreal?

This is one of the biggest wastes of space I have ever seen. The person who originally came up with this story is one of the biggest idiots in the world.

Could MLB return to Montreal?

Something that should have never left. Would have been the Jays/Expos in the World Series but the lockout royally screwed both teams over neither team has ever been the same since (Jays & Expos/Nationals). I saw bring them into the A.L East get rid of the Tampa Bay OverRayted OR put them in the N.L.
