As Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander works on a no-no, Jered Weaver of the Angels has been ejected from the game for throwing a pitch over the head of Tigers' catcher Alex Avila. Many would say Weaver had good reason to throw at Avila.

The previous hitter was Carlos Guillen, who homered off Weaver. After Guillen hit the ball, he stood in the box and posed for several seconds before staring down Weaver and even appeared to break into a smirk. Weaver started to yell back and Guillen and had to be calmed by the home plate umpire. Earlier in the game, Weaver had words with Magglio Ordonez on a home run -- for what Weaver perceived as Ordonez admiring his shot for too long. So Weaver unhurled his next pitch over the head of Avila and was immediately ejected.

It's hard to blame Weaver for being upset -- as Guillen's display was absolutely over the top -- but throwing near someone's head is never OK. Just put the ball in the middle of Avila's back and be done with it. Then again, you could also make the argument Weaver's attitude is what caused the Tigers' to show him up, so the blame falls back on Weaver.

Regardless, Weaver's gone and the Angels trail 3-0.

The brothers are from the same mold.  Jared's older brother Jeff was a hot headed malcontent who was part of the dope smoking burned out Tigers in 2001.  Both are aggressive pitchers, but cowards all the same.  Too bad neither pitcher bats.  I would like to see what a 94 mph fastball does to his melon.

weaver is a class less idiot...no problem throwing at someone in certain situations, but not at the head...if baseball had a real commissioner instead of a corrupt incompetent moron, this stuff would be dealt with

Everyone knew Avila was getting thrown at.  Weaver started talking trash in the 3rd inning after Magglio's homerun and he continued with it throughout the game.  Guillen DEFINITELY showed up Weaver after the homerun.  It was borderline obnoxious, though I enjoyed it quite much, as a Tigers fan.

Verlander was absolutely amazing again, except for the defensive miscues in the 8th.  The guy is just a workhorse.  Throwing 100 mph a half dozen times in the 8th and then back to back 101 mph fastballs to Hunter to strike him out was just plain SICK!
