Jered Weaver to appeal 6-game suspension

WeaverThe Angels' Jered Weaver has been suspended six games for intentionally throwing at Alex Avila during Sunday's game. Manager Mike Scioscia was also suspended a game, which he will serve on Tuesday night.

Weaver, meanwhile, will appeal his suspension. He is expected to have a hearing in New York next week when the Angels are in town for a series against the Yankees.

"I obviously knew that something was going to happen," Weaver told the Associated Press. "It's six games, and it is what it is, but I've decided to appeal it. I wanted my voice heard a little bit on the situation and how it went down, see what they feel about it and go from there. So we'll see what happens."

If MLB is looking for contrition, Weaver doesn't sound like he's too interested in that. When asked by a reporter if he'd have handled anything differently, Weaver didn't give an answer that will please Joe Torre.

"I wouldn't have done anything different," he said, according to the Orange County Register.

On Sunday, Magglio Ordonez hit a home run off of Weaver in the third inning of a tight battle against the Tigers' Justin Verlander, and Ordonez paused to watch the home run, perhaps trying to determine if it would be fair or foul. Weaver shouted at Ordonez to run, which Detroit did not take too kindly. When Carlos Guillen blasted a home run in the seventh, he did everything but dance on Weaver's mound in milking the home run, which made the right-hander hot. Despite being immediately warned by the umpire, his next pitch went over Avila's head, earning an ejection.

Weaver said he wasn't trying to hit Avila, just send a message.

"[Avila] caught me in the All-Star game, and we gained a little respect for each other there. So I'm not here to hurt nobody. I just felt like I needed to prove a point," Weaver said. "I think if I wanted to hit him, I could have hit him. I just threw a fastball up and in and it got up and away. It probably looked a little worse than it was, but it was clearly about a foot or two over his head."

Avila had little to say on the matter.

"Part of the game. Suspend him? OK," Avila told the AP. "I've still got to play today."

Weaver's suspension is the same length as Cleveland's Carlos Carrasco, who was dinged for six games on Monday for throwing at the Royals' Billy Butler. A six game suspension guarantees a starter will miss a start.

I totally agree.  If Weaver had wanted to hit Avila, he would've hit him.   He wanted to make the batter uncomfortable, which I'm sure he effectively did.  6 games?  Is that 6 starts, or 6 total games?

It wasn't close because Avila ducked you moron. The intent was clear! He threw at his head!

Jared Weaver is a whiny little biatch.  Its only fitting that the cry baby plays for a California team.  I wish Guillen would have danced the pitchers mound.  He brought it on by acting like a little biatch when Mags hit the homer...GO TIGERS!!!!

This suspension is total BS. Do you really think a Professional Pitcher would throw at a batter with the intention of hitting him??  And Miss???  It was just a warning and should be punishable the same way....A Warning...

Why suspend Guillen? Did he have an intent to injure another player?

He should be banned 50 games. HGH use mandates that. Mr. Weaver came out of nowhere to pitch like Tim Lincecum or Roy Halladay. His ERA is usually in the 4's. The guy is cheating. Perhaps it's the goatee that's making me think he's up to no good...like Jesse James.

I agree. When a pitcher gets suspended...it should be for 6 starts. Weaver missing only a week is not fair. But then again we all know how fair MLB is. When umpires make mistakes NOTHING happens. When umpires misbheave NOTHING happens. But when players, managers and coaches get alittle upset about a bad call they are quickly ejected from the game and some are fined. The way I see it...if the umpires were not so incompetent the players, managers and coaches would not have had a reason to get upset in the first place. Umpires should be allowed only three mistakes in their job. Make 3 mistakes and they are banned from all levels of baseball. Yes, that means that they will not be able to get a job umpiring at a Little League game. We don't want umpires corrupting our youth.

Why is that when umpires make a mistake that they never own up to it and that the umpires working the game close ranks and protect him from controversy and boos. Umpires make me sick. I can understand when an umpire misses a strike or calls a play out when he should be safe, but how can an umpire miss a call on a homerun? A homerun is not a quick play. It takes 5 seconds or more for it to happen and yet many umpires are always confused when calling a ball a homerun or not a homerun. That's why the yellow lines are for...duh!

Jered Weaver suspended for six games

Why was Gullien not suspended? I've never seen anyone pimp a homer like that, not cool. He put his teammate in danger.

at no point did gullien put avila in danger.  the moment weaver decided to throw at avila's head was guilein's teammate in danger.

i understand the rule.  plunk him in the hip.  never to the head.  weaver's a great pitcher... and on occasion a whiny punk.

Why was Gullien not suspended? I've never seen anyone pimp a homer like that, not cool. He put his teammate in danger. You knew the next guy was getting hit when the umpire issued the warning when Guillen was still slowly trotting the bases. Weaver was coming out anyway so he didn't care. Next time they play will be very interesting.
