WeaverThe Angels' Jered Weaver has been suspended six games for intentionally throwing at Alex Avila during Sunday's game. Manager Mike Scioscia was also suspended a game, which he will serve on Tuesday night.

Weaver, meanwhile, will appeal his suspension. He is expected to have a hearing in New York next week when the Angels are in town for a series against the Yankees.

"I obviously knew that something was going to happen," Weaver told the Associated Press. "It's six games, and it is what it is, but I've decided to appeal it. I wanted my voice heard a little bit on the situation and how it went down, see what they feel about it and go from there. So we'll see what happens."

If MLB is looking for contrition, Weaver doesn't sound like he's too interested in that. When asked by a reporter if he'd have handled anything differently, Weaver didn't give an answer that will please Joe Torre.

"I wouldn't have done anything different," he said, according to the Orange County Register.

On Sunday, Magglio Ordonez hit a home run off of Weaver in the third inning of a tight battle against the Tigers' Justin Verlander, and Ordonez paused to watch the home run, perhaps trying to determine if it would be fair or foul. Weaver shouted at Ordonez to run, which Detroit did not take too kindly. When Carlos Guillen blasted a home run in the seventh, he did everything but dance on Weaver's mound in milking the home run, which made the right-hander hot. Despite being immediately warned by the umpire, his next pitch went over Avila's head, earning an ejection.

Weaver said he wasn't trying to hit Avila, just send a message.

"[Avila] caught me in the All-Star game, and we gained a little respect for each other there. So I'm not here to hurt nobody. I just felt like I needed to prove a point," Weaver said. "I think if I wanted to hit him, I could have hit him. I just threw a fastball up and in and it got up and away. It probably looked a little worse than it was, but it was clearly about a foot or two over his head."

Avila had little to say on the matter.

"Part of the game. Suspend him? OK," Avila told the AP. "I've still got to play today."

Weaver's suspension is the same length as Cleveland's Carlos Carrasco, who was dinged for six games on Monday for throwing at the Royals' Billy Butler. A six game suspension guarantees a starter will miss a start.

I agree that Weaver should have been suspended. But I wouldnt have throwed at the next batter i would have threw a ball or my glove at Gullien for taunting me.

Three comments I need to make... AGAIN.   One, Guillen doesn't do that if Weaver doesn't start this whole mess by yipping at Ordonez who did NOTHING wrong.  The fuc*** ball hit the foul pole, it was that close to being foul and obviously a veteran like Ordonez knows when it's going to be close.  Why shouldn't he watch it?  Second of all Ordonez has played 14 years and had some injuries in the past.  He doesn't run around the bases after he or somebody else hits a home run. He's slow...... and finally, number 3 ... if Weaver would have had the balls to charge Guillen and fight him like a man I'd say he was wrong for starting it but hey, he stood up for himself.  But to reply to Guillen making fun of him by throwing at Avila's head is ridiculous....... it's wrong... and he deserved every bit of that 6 game suspension.

I don't blame Weaver for being pissed for what Guillen did but you can't throw at the next batter's head. That is totally STUPID and totally bush league!

This is sooo great, Weaver just dissed himself.  No team will ever fear him for the rest of the season, they all know now that to blow up the best pitcher the Angels HAD is just be slow down the line, or look at him a little.  Francoeur loves to stick his tongue out at the pitcher, but Angels don't play them again.

What are you going to do if that happens in a game that actually matters? Like game 7 of the ALCS? With the game tied at 2? Guillen hits the go-ahead shot off Weaver in the 7th and... slips into a pink tankini with no bottom and does the macarena backwards while rounding the basepaths?

I don't need to watch the game when the storyline includes "Carlos Guillen struts his stuff around the basepaths after hitting home run"... the fact that its Carlos Guillen and the fact that he's showboating is reason enough for disdain! I don't really care about the context. That man has little reason to act like "the club can't even handle him".

For what it's worth, Weaver's actions are just as offensive to me. He should have taken it like a man! People hit home runs off of you every other day... it's the big leagues! But this blog was already full of comments like that, so I thought I'd harp on Guillen instead. If everybody in baseball starts acting like Weaver and Guillen the MLB will soon become like the NBA. Keep your cool and be modest.

Guillen did what he should have in this situation.  Weaver is a good guy, but was way out of control this day.  His pitcher was throwing a no hitter at the time, so he got his back.  Weaver threw at the mans head on purpose.  There is no excuse for that.  Hit him in the ribs and all is well.  He should get six games, because he has been around long enough to know better!

Overboard, obviously YOU DIDN'T WATCH THE GAME! Weaver actually started the silliness by misunderstanding Ordonez' home run. Magglio was merely watching to see if it was going to stay fair or go foul. Ordonez is not the type of player to showboat. Weaver took his reaction as a show-up - WRONG! So from that point on, Weaver was yapping at Magglio, Cabrera, and anyone else that came close to him. It was obviously to anyone who could read lips to what he was saying. I don't defend Carlos Guillen for his actions but you have to understand the reasons behind what he did.

Next time, watch the game before you comment...

No!

(Chickenchit should have ran like he was shot out of a cannon.  Then acts surprised when retaliation takes place.  I don't believe in, and have never, headhunted.  That's what the torso is for.)

Exactly! Big deal that Magglio watched the ball leave the park. Weaver should have just prepared himself for the next batter. So now he is going to lose six games pay, for being an idiot!! Time to grow up!!!

Lol. Weaver looked like such a little kid yelling and flailing his "pretends to not care" hair about while screaming obsenities. If it's that easy to get under his skin, watch out! Other teams will start doing stuff like this just to ruffle him.
