Jered Weaver to appeal 6-game suspension

WeaverThe Angels' Jered Weaver has been suspended six games for intentionally throwing at Alex Avila during Sunday's game. Manager Mike Scioscia was also suspended a game, which he will serve on Tuesday night.

Weaver, meanwhile, will appeal his suspension. He is expected to have a hearing in New York next week when the Angels are in town for a series against the Yankees.

"I obviously knew that something was going to happen," Weaver told the Associated Press. "It's six games, and it is what it is, but I've decided to appeal it. I wanted my voice heard a little bit on the situation and how it went down, see what they feel about it and go from there. So we'll see what happens."

If MLB is looking for contrition, Weaver doesn't sound like he's too interested in that. When asked by a reporter if he'd have handled anything differently, Weaver didn't give an answer that will please Joe Torre.

"I wouldn't have done anything different," he said, according to the Orange County Register.

On Sunday, Magglio Ordonez hit a home run off of Weaver in the third inning of a tight battle against the Tigers' Justin Verlander, and Ordonez paused to watch the home run, perhaps trying to determine if it would be fair or foul. Weaver shouted at Ordonez to run, which Detroit did not take too kindly. When Carlos Guillen blasted a home run in the seventh, he did everything but dance on Weaver's mound in milking the home run, which made the right-hander hot. Despite being immediately warned by the umpire, his next pitch went over Avila's head, earning an ejection.

Weaver said he wasn't trying to hit Avila, just send a message.

"[Avila] caught me in the All-Star game, and we gained a little respect for each other there. So I'm not here to hurt nobody. I just felt like I needed to prove a point," Weaver said. "I think if I wanted to hit him, I could have hit him. I just threw a fastball up and in and it got up and away. It probably looked a little worse than it was, but it was clearly about a foot or two over his head."

Avila had little to say on the matter.

"Part of the game. Suspend him? OK," Avila told the AP. "I've still got to play today."

Weaver's suspension is the same length as Cleveland's Carlos Carrasco, who was dinged for six games on Monday for throwing at the Royals' Billy Butler. A six game suspension guarantees a starter will miss a start.

Jered Weaver suspended for six games

One thing about the NBA and especially the NFL that just kills me is all the showboating. I really can't stand that crap. I don't mind passion -Ray Lewis or Tom Brady shouting and screaming right after a big play is okay- but when it oozes of arrogance I just get turned off. You play with a ball for a living... have some perspective!

Baseball was, I thought, the last major North American sport where modesty and a gentleman's code of conduct still applied. Although I can't defend Jered Weaver's actions the other day, Carlos Guillen is every bit as wrong.

What's the point of showboating there??? Last I checked this wasn't the Division Series (if it's Angels-Tigers I guess that would have to be the ALCS based on probable playoff seeding... and NEITHER Los Angeles nor Detroit can pencil themselves into the postseason yet). You hit the big home run... you gave your team a little breathing room... now go sit down! Let the scoreboard do the rest of the talking!

I mean, it's hard to defend the guy when he's Carlos Guillen! He's not having a season like Jose Bautista's. He doesn't slug like Mark Teixeira. He's not Miguel Cabrera or Victor Martinez. He wasn't an all-star. What reason does he have to showboat? What has he accomplished????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

A fist pump, a motion to the Man Upstairs, round the bases, smile at your teammates and the fans, and sit your fat ass back down!!!

Jered Weaver to appeal 6-game suspension

YOu should maybe have, you know, WATCHED the game before commenting on anything. Ordonez didn't even glance Weaver's way.  He's just old, slow and wanted to make sure it was a fair ball before he started running.  Can't fault him for being lazy.

"I think that he will be seeing a few more home run saunters when the suspension is over."

I doubt it.  No team wants to get into a beanball war.  And that's just asking for one...

Jered Weaver suspended for six games

That was one of the best home run trots that I have ever seen. I probably cost Verlander the no hitter with the length of the inning, but oh well. Speaking of Verlander, he would have gotten his revenge on the guy that hit the homer, not the poor guy up after him. I thought that Avila did a great job of not running out there and kicking the crap out of the wus. He was still a key element in a no hitter and he didn't want to get kicked out as well. Another time and another place Jered. I will say this as well, Jered Weaver just informed the rest of the league how to get under his skin. I think that he will be seeing a few more home run saunters when the suspension is over.

Jered Weaver suspended for six games

I agree that Weaver should have been suspended. But I wouldnt have throwed at the next batter i would have threw a ball or my glove at Gullien for taunting me.

Jered Weaver suspended for six games

Weaver has acted like this ever since he's played for the Angels.  Ive seen him yell at his own players for not making plays he thought they should have made.  He once cursed and yelled at Tori Hunter in centerfield for not making a catch that glanced off his glove and hit the centerfield wall.  Im an Angel fan and agree that he needs his comeuppance!!
