Jered Weaver to appeal 6-game suspension

WeaverThe Angels' Jered Weaver has been suspended six games for intentionally throwing at Alex Avila during Sunday's game. Manager Mike Scioscia was also suspended a game, which he will serve on Tuesday night.

Weaver, meanwhile, will appeal his suspension. He is expected to have a hearing in New York next week when the Angels are in town for a series against the Yankees.

"I obviously knew that something was going to happen," Weaver told the Associated Press. "It's six games, and it is what it is, but I've decided to appeal it. I wanted my voice heard a little bit on the situation and how it went down, see what they feel about it and go from there. So we'll see what happens."

If MLB is looking for contrition, Weaver doesn't sound like he's too interested in that. When asked by a reporter if he'd have handled anything differently, Weaver didn't give an answer that will please Joe Torre.

"I wouldn't have done anything different," he said, according to the Orange County Register.

On Sunday, Magglio Ordonez hit a home run off of Weaver in the third inning of a tight battle against the Tigers' Justin Verlander, and Ordonez paused to watch the home run, perhaps trying to determine if it would be fair or foul. Weaver shouted at Ordonez to run, which Detroit did not take too kindly. When Carlos Guillen blasted a home run in the seventh, he did everything but dance on Weaver's mound in milking the home run, which made the right-hander hot. Despite being immediately warned by the umpire, his next pitch went over Avila's head, earning an ejection.

Weaver said he wasn't trying to hit Avila, just send a message.

"[Avila] caught me in the All-Star game, and we gained a little respect for each other there. So I'm not here to hurt nobody. I just felt like I needed to prove a point," Weaver said. "I think if I wanted to hit him, I could have hit him. I just threw a fastball up and in and it got up and away. It probably looked a little worse than it was, but it was clearly about a foot or two over his head."

Avila had little to say on the matter.

"Part of the game. Suspend him? OK," Avila told the AP. "I've still got to play today."

Weaver's suspension is the same length as Cleveland's Carlos Carrasco, who was dinged for six games on Monday for throwing at the Royals' Billy Butler. A six game suspension guarantees a starter will miss a start.

Jered Weaver suspended for six games

Typically "politically correct" behavior by MLB to rape the game at the expense of the pitchers. Sandy Koufax once said that the art of pitching is instilling fear into hitters. With MLB doing everything they can to juice offense into the game, this should not be surprising, but it is sad. Give me Old School baseball any day of the week over this watered down crap. Good for you Scioscia for not backing down and giving your pitchers the freedom to retaliate.

Jered Weaver suspended for six games

Jered Weaver needs to grow up. In the past, people have questioned his behavior and attitude. He has been putting up amazing numbers this year. He then gets owned on 2 home runs, something he's not used to giving up, and becomes a cry baby. Grow some balls, go back to the mound, and make your next pitch.

Jered Weaver suspended for six games

I live in California. Many Angel players did not support the behavior of Weaver. In some interviews they rolled their eyes before saying that both sides acted badly. It was clear that Weaver was the one acting like a child. Magglio has always been a classy player, and all he did was wait a second to see if his ball was going to be fair or fowl (if you've seen him run lately you know why - it's painful to watch). Then Weaver started using profanity and telling Mags to run. That behavior was so completely uncalled for that it will define Weaver's character forever.

Guillen simply taunted Weaver as Weaver deserved.

Childish behavior aside, Weaver knew that throwing at the next batter would get him tossed from the game and he did it anyway. He put his own childish feelings above the good of the team - another character issue that now defines him - like Roger Clemens throwing a bat at a runner. Had Weaver immediately apologized to his team for losing his cool the issue might go away - but like Alomar spitting at an ump - he will be remembered for this forever.

Pretty sad, but it brings to memory the saying that "Sports doesn't build character, sports reveals it."

Weaver: Great athlete, tiny person.

You must be thinking of Jeff Weaver. Please check the stats before posting. The rest of your comments were nonsense also.

At least it was a good laugh and to the guy saying look out Carlos your gonna get it all I have to say is OOOOOOOOOOOHHH!!!!  Its baseball not hockey.  So he might take a pitch and the pitcher will get suspended again.  HA HA there is not much recourse in baseball to get revenge.  Its not McCarty and Lemeuix, its Weaver and Guillen.  Doesnt even sound scary.

Jered Weaver suspended for six games

Jered Weaver is a punk just like his brother Jeff. Who is he to tell Mags to run faster. He should be suspended at least 3 starts and so should the manager.

To all of those touting that a pitcher should be suspended 6 starts, that's fine.  BUT if I'm a manager, I'd put Weaver in queue to start the next 6 games.  Problem solved.

The only way to accomplish a true 6 game suspension the way that you are suggesting is to also REQUIRE pitchers to rest a certain amount of days between starts.  While we know the general rule of thumb is that a pitcher goes every 5th game, this isn't a mandated rule by MLB.
