Jorge PosadaBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Throughout the next month, you'll hear every once in a while about players that have been placed on waivers. That doesn't mean your favorite team is going to release a star player, it's just that they're keeping their options open.

With that in mind comes this report from the New York Post that the Yankees have placed A.J. Burnett, Rafael Soriano and Jorge Posada on waivers.

All three are priced high enough that it's unlikely they'll be claimed. None of the three seem to be that appealing in a trade for another team, either.

Burnett is the team's No. 2 starter -- by payroll, if not performance. He has a record of 8-9 with a  4.23 ERA, but makes $16.5 million through 2013. He does have a limited no-trade clause, allowing him to block trades to 10 clubs.

Soriano signed a three-year, $35 million contract before the season to serve as Mariano Rivera's setup man. He's appeared in just 17 games this season and has allowed nine earned runs in 16 innings, while striking out 12 and walking 11. It's unlikely anyone will want to take on his contract, despite his 45 saves last season for the Rays.

Then there's Posada -- who has famously played for nobody but the Yankees in his 17 seasons. Posada is a free agent after the season, but appears headed for retirement. He's hitting just .236/.318/.382, starting 66 games at designated hitter and eight games at first base, all for $13.1 million.

Good luck with that!!!!!! Taking him from the Jays ans overpaying him is the only time I can remember the yanks doing the jays a favor.

He has always been overpaid and the yanks just added to it.No one will take him unless the yanks eat his salary.

Wow, I expect all that from Red Sox fans, but Yankees fans? Burnett deserves it, no doubt--he's sucked the last two years. Soriano, not so sure, the guy has been injured and I'm sure will bounce back, probably for another team (that's Yankees baseball) and be a star! But Jorge Posada? The guy has been a Yankee forever and deserves some respect! He will retire at the end of the year anyway. Whatever happened to loyalty in baseball? And I'm sure the majority of you will give me the big league/business speech, but it's B.S.--it's what's wrong with the game today. Pos has given his blood, sweat, and tears to this team and you don't treat a guy like sh*t because he's having an unproductive season; he's a five time allstar and two-time allstar MVP and has been integral in the Yankees success. Put him out to pasture if he's hurting the team, but don't slap him in the face. And Mr. 3000's next, I know, and I'm sure everyone's happy about it--the fans and the haters who think he's past it and hurting the team. If you're a true Yankee fan, you value what those guys have brought to the table year after year and you think--know--they deserve better--unless of course, you personally are losing money.

Talk about non-news.  Just about every player in the big leagues gets put on waivers in August.  There's no reason not to, if they get claimed you can pull them back anyway.

Bautista the best player in the game?  Maybe this year.  Pujols has been doing it for ten years straight since he was a rookie.  How many seasons has Bautista been in the league?

Ok Im a Jays fan so please dont take this the wrong way but, why are all you people hating on how much money these guys get paid?? I mean Posada at 13 million? Burnett who you left the Jays for you and Soriano making $35 million?   Do you think any of these three players would say NO to the YANKEES offering up all that money? Who'se fault really is it?  I mean if you want to put blame on anyone blame the GM of the YANKEES NOT the players who ACCEPTED THE OFFERS..  Its just sad that all of you hate on these players because they arent producing and yeah father time has caught up to some of them and well also the pressure of pitching in NEW YORK has something to do with it.  But honestly my point is lets all stop hating and bashing players and saying how GREEDY they are when HONESTLY if all GMS's offered them what they were truly worth than players would all sign for a normal salary.  Jeter holding out for more money is when you can say he's greedy.  Pujos holding out for more money when St. Louis offered him $15 million a year is GREEDY.. The guy wanted $20 million and more a season and yet the best player in baseball  JOSE BAUTISTA (yes I said it) signed  for $8 million a year.. Lets see what Albert Pujos gets offered now.. TALK ABOUT GREEDY.. I hope St. Louis and all the other GM's in the league recognize how amazing AA is doing in Toronto and follow his lead by NOT signing the best player in the leagues $15-20 million a season.   Yeah the Jays have work to do but you understand my point..  Hope this helps..

About time- should have tried to move them BEFORE the deadline ! Burnett is a waste!  And i love the Yankees, but come on, time to wise up ! They will never win a Championship with out hungry young players. Time to show off the Farm Muscles and build a new core.
