Yadier Molina

By C. Trent Rosecrans

Tuesday night's Cardinals-Brewers game was highly entertaining, but it took a very ugly turn in the 10th inning when St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina spit in the face of home plate umpire Rob Drake after bumping him at least three times.

Molina didn't appear to rear back and spit directly in the face Roberto Alomar-style, but he was yelling and Drake was the victim of collateral spit and obviously wiped his face multiple times. Even as Molina was in the dugout and still yelling at Drake, the umpire used his shirt to wipe spittle from his face.

Molina watched a called third strike at the knees to lead off the top of the 10th inning and went nuts on Drake -- bumping Drake twice and then after Drake tried to turn away, Molina came back and bumped him again. Molina was ejected after the first bump. Molina denied spitting on Drake.

"That was a bad call," Molina told reporters, including Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I never spit on any face or man. In the moment, I was yelling. I didn't spit."

Molina had to be held back by teammates and coaches as he continued to go after Drake.

Here's a gif of Molina going berserk from Twitter user @soccerkevin11:

And for the record, Pitch F/X showed the pitch was a ball -- even though that's no excuse for Molina's reaction.

Umpires refused to comment after the game.

Molina bumps, spits on umpire

"it is bad enough larussa ran the juiced up factory that was OAK then allowed mcgwire to bring that to STL and then had nerve to hire him as coach"
you have to love people like you...yupp oakland then st louis were the only teams juicing up...come on now...EVERY damn team was doing it...the players knew, the coaches knew, the owners knew, hell the commish one who didnt think it hurt the game...baseballs ratings were at a all time low in the mid 90's, the comes the summer of Mcgwire/Sosa...that summer put baseball back on the map...without that summer, baseball wouldnt be where it is without sterioids in the game, baseball wouldnt be where it is my views what you want, but you cant denie FACTS....and again, at the time roids were good for a declining sport...and just because mcgwire juiced doesnt mean he doesnt know the game of baseball to be able to teach it...

Molina bumps, spits on umpire

I'm an unfortunate Mets fan who remembers 2007 NLCS.  Molina hit the game/series winning home run so I hate him. So I have no reason to defend the guy, but....

The umpires have been horrible at best all year.  They have blown some obvious calls that have changed the outcomes of several games.  The Braves v. Pirates game where the running was tagged out  3 feet in front of home plate in the bottom of the 10th, but the ump calls him safe etc... It must be frustrating as a cathcer to watch pitches not being fairly called all game.  Strikes for their pitcher are called Balls for yours.  I was waiting for a player to go nuts this year and one finally did.

I'm not defending Molina's reaction, but this was bound to happen.  We are getting to the point of the season where every game effects the playoff landscape.  If players are being held to a standard what is used to hold umpires accountable for blown calls that affect critical games like these?

two game for each bump  that equates to  6 game suspension.  Hate if for my fantasy team, but that should be the minimum.  As for the spitting, It wasn't Robby style and I think the umpire was over zealous in that aspect.  Wouldn't surprise me to see 10 games and after appear knocked down to 6.

The league cannot and should not allow any player or coach to bump an umpire.  And if this was the 10th inning and the Umpire had been  calling that pitch all night it was a strike no matter what the tracker showed.

if baseball just slaps molina on wrist which they most likely will do STL will get even more arrogant..larussa has zero respect for anyone except himself..he treats other players and managers like disciples of his didn't invent the game .of course he doesn't know that ..molina's actions warrent a 2 week suspension and lasrussa deserves at least a week for his brazebn comments about braun should have ducked..his behavior has gotten worse and is now an embarrassment to STL as well as baseball..but alas the ballless bud selig will do nothing to eithe rone of them and STL will cause several more bench clearing brawls til someone is seriously hurt is bad enough larussa ran the juiced up factory that was OAK then allowed mcgwire to bring that to STL and then had nerve to hire him as coach ..and his constant belittling of other managers now this?..heres hoping we have another year of no STL in playoffs and once pujols leave swe can see how bad a manager larussa is..hell he'll probably throw at pujols cause he

"As a catcher, he should know the strike zone better than anyone"  like i said in my post on this topic...being the catcher he did the strike zone, and thats probably why he acted the way he did...if the ump hadnt been giving that pitch all game then he did right then (extra innings/lead off batter) thats what would have set him off...

And you sound like the WORST cardinals fan EVER!!  No rookies ever stare at homeruns when they come up out of respect...once you're the respected player, you some what earn that...and there is ZERO wrong with being a cocky player...There is nothing wrong with being confident in your abilities and letting everyone know that...sports are not like they were back in the cant expect everyone to play the way they did 40 years ago...the most loved players in the league are the cocky ones, and you cant denie that...

"If you don't kiss LaRussa's butt, you are gone (see Colby Rasmus)."  guess it wasnt his terrible batting avg, his decline in power, his fall from defense, the emergence of J.Jay, the need for another starting pitcher, the need for bullpen help...yupp, guess none of that was the reason and it was because he wasnt cocky and didnt kiss ass...

If he is not suspended for at least 30 games, MLB is a joke! This is basically an attack by a steroid enraged gang member.

go mow a lawn or wash dishes..america let these people in years ago as land of opportunity, and they keep coming..thats why the usa has sunk to this level...lets pay for all their 8 kids they have, then bring more in to pay more for them..a joke...i undestand being angry, but he is playing baseball with cameras on him..try not to be a typical dishwasher

This is pathetic.  People like you are destroying this country, not Yadier Molina and his "8" kids.  I'm confident that Molina is a better US Citizen than you are.  I've seen his house, and I know his income.  I'm 99% sure he's paying more taxes and carrying a bigger load than you are.  He takes care of his family and kids.

The "dishwashers" that are "typical", you don't know a damn thing about.  They work hard, and appreciate the opportunity they are given.  Most are from Central America (Ecuador, not Mexico) and work hard in the restaurant industry to better their lives.  Why do the restaurant owners hire them?  Oh yeah, they work circles around us white people.

Take the hate and bullsh!t somewhere else.  You're a piece of sh!t.

Molina bumps, spits on umpire

As an umpire, I usually always will defend umpires, and whether the pitch was a ball or a strike, the reaction was one that deserves a 1 or 2 game suspension (that was a bump). However, Molina did not spit at the umpire. He was yelling and some saliva left his mouth and hit Drake. I hope that MLB can look at the replay and make the correct judgement.
