Yadier Molina

By C. Trent Rosecrans

Tuesday night's Cardinals-Brewers game was highly entertaining, but it took a very ugly turn in the 10th inning when St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina spit in the face of home plate umpire Rob Drake after bumping him at least three times.

Molina didn't appear to rear back and spit directly in the face Roberto Alomar-style, but he was yelling and Drake was the victim of collateral spit and obviously wiped his face multiple times. Even as Molina was in the dugout and still yelling at Drake, the umpire used his shirt to wipe spittle from his face.

Molina watched a called third strike at the knees to lead off the top of the 10th inning and went nuts on Drake -- bumping Drake twice and then after Drake tried to turn away, Molina came back and bumped him again. Molina was ejected after the first bump. Molina denied spitting on Drake.

"That was a bad call," Molina told reporters, including Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I never spit on any face or man. In the moment, I was yelling. I didn't spit."

Molina had to be held back by teammates and coaches as he continued to go after Drake.

Here's a gif of Molina going berserk from Twitter user @soccerkevin11:

And for the record, Pitch F/X showed the pitch was a ball -- even though that's no excuse for Molina's reaction.

Umpires refused to comment after the game.

Molina bumps, spits on umpire

Really, another potential blown call by an umpire.  Knock me over with a feather.  Frustrated as he was there is no justification for Molina to go Roberto Alomar on the umpire. Now his team will have to suffer without him in the lineup for however many games the league decides, in a tight division like the cardinals are in this could be critical.

Molina bumps, spits on umpire

This kind of crap has got to stop in the MLB. Bud needs to make an example. anyone who does not leave in a timely manner (immediately or 15 day suspension) if you are in the face of the umpire with arms length. 15 day suspension. period this is garbage and hard to watch. What can the umpire do to protect himself??? they should give them tasers to use behind the plate. DUde starts to pop off  and bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. just my thoughts.

MOLINA IS A PUNK!

WHAT MOLINA DID LAST NIGHT WAS PATHETIC.  I ACTUALLY SAW THAT PART OF THE GAME WHEN, ALL OF A SUDDEN, HE BECAME THE THUG THAT HE IS.  HIS TRUE COLORS CAME OUT.  I'VE SEEN HIM PLAY MANY TIMES BEFORE BEING A REDS FAN AND ROOTING AGAINST THE CARDS.  I HAVE ALWAYS RESPECTED ST. LOUIS AND, UNLIKE MOST REDS FANS, HAVE ALWAYS GIVEN THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT TO THE CARDS.  BUT THIS POOR EXCUSE OF A HUMAN BEING MOLINA EMBARRASSED HIMSELF LAST NIGHT.  THE CALL WAS BORDERLINE BUT THAT SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WAY HE ACTED.  THIS COMPLETE IDIOT SHOULD BE SUSPENDED AT LEAST 10 GAMES AND NOT BE PAYED FOR THOSE 10 GAMES.  ADMIT YOUR MISTAKE AND DON'T DO IT AGAIN IDIOT!

The report says "collateral spit"in describing saliva spraying from the mouth of a yelling player.  So he didn't actually "spit" on the umpire.  But you can't make physical contact with an umpire or yell at him or show him up.  Look for a 3 or 4 game suspension after a long delay for an appeal.  In the olden times before the union, the league president could do whatever he wanted to punish a player, and he could do it immediately.

"meantime the cars will keep winning"  Hey, the Cardinals and their fans are so pious. You won the game, quit your WHINNING! Or in your case, wine-ing.

So an umpire was inconsistent and blew a strike call, that any reason for Molina to go ballistic? Maybe there was something else said earlier in the game, who knows? Either way, Molina will learn how stupid it is to do this as he gets a 5-7 game suspension and a hefty fine. There is no defense for what he did, period.

As for Braun, I can see one payback pitch, but two? That pitcher should be fined too.

Umpires and bad calls are part of the game, but behavior like Molina's is not.

skreffty, I'm a little confused.  Where are they going to deport him?  He's an American citizen with a US passport.  Just trying to figure out any logic behind this statement.
To Puerto Rico of course!  Don't miss the forest for the trees shadow, the point is that spitting should always be given the harshest of punishments.  Everyone not a Cardinal or Vancouver fan agrees.  I'm sure Arizona, Georgia, or Alabama have laws against Puerto Ricans lol (those states just see a Mexican no matter they are from).  That was tongue-in-cheek.  We are different people, I get that, while you encourage spitting I condemn it.  When people disagree, often one side will look for any angle, especially when wrong, liek when defending a spitter.
