As if the Mariners haven't had enough bad fortune this season, a bad hop caused a ground ball to jump up and break first baseman Justin Smoak's nose (Larry Stone via Twitter). This came on the night Smoak finally returned to the lineup after an eight-game absence due to a thumb injury.

Smoak was in front of a Jarrod Saltalamacchia ground ball in the second inning as the Mariners were facing the Red Sox at home, when the ball unexpectedly jumped up and hit him square in the face. Smoak was immediately replaced at first by Adam Kennedy. There's been no timetable announced for how much time, if any, Smoak will miss. It's unlikely he'd be able to play in the infield, but depending upon the severity of the fracture, it's conceivable Smoak could actually still bat and serve as a designated hitter through the injury. We'll know more when the Mariners announce his status. Of course, Smoak is also reportedly undergoing a CT scan, so if he has a concussion, he's definitely going to miss some time and may be out for a while.

Smoak, 24, came to Seattle from the Rangers in last season's Cliff Lee trade. Smoak is hitting .221/.318/.388 with 12 home runs and 44 RBI.

I guess it sort of hit him "square in the face"... Other than the fact that the bill of his cap was between the ball and his face-- it actually could have been a lot worse.  If the hat hadn't gotten in the way that ball would have certainly broken more than just his nose.  Kid has had a tough season-- lost his dad, finally got on a roll then hurt his right thumb...  Struggled a bit then finally got his swing back and- bam- hurt his LEFT thumb on a similar type play where he tried to bare hand a bad hop and jammed his thumb...  That led to a 10 day rest, and then his first game back, after hitting a really well struck ball to deep center-- BAM!!!!-- Saltamachia sends him back to the bench.

Tough times, Justin.  Hang in there.

The ball was actually hit by Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Its not that big of a deal, but its amazing how often simple details are screwed up by the writers reporting things on this site.

It is a bummer he had to get hurt but that ball hit by Jacoby Ellsbury was a hard hit ball that took a bad bounce. I do not know how deep the Seattle Mariners bench or Triple A is. I know he has not hit to what was expected from him .221- 12 homers and 44 rbi's. But Seattle needs to get some hitters up there. The Rangers hit circles around them and the Angels play small ball. I hope the Mariners get some better talent.
