The Cubs have announced they have fired general manager Jim Hendry. However, during his meeting with the press, Hendry announced the move became official today, but had been told July 22 that he wasn't coming back, but was kept until after the deadline to sign draft picks.

The embattled Cubs general manager had served as the team's general manager since July of 2002.

According to several reports, the Cubs clubhouse was closed before Friday afternoon's game against the Cardinals as Hendry addressed the team.

Asssistant GM Randy Bush will serve as interim general manager.

"My family and I appreciate Jim's dedication during our time with the Cubs and thank him for his overall 17 years of service to the Cubs organization," owner Tom Ricketts said in a press release from the team.  "It is time for a fresh approach in our baseball leadership and our search begins immediately for our next general manager."

Under Hendry, the Cubs went 749-748. He had been with the Cubs since 1994 when he joined the team as director of player development.

Even before Carlos Zambrano's recent meltdown, Hendry was seen as on thin ice with the Cubs. During his tenure, he weighed down the team with hefty contracts to the likes of Zambrano (five years, $91.5 million), Alfonso Soriano (eight years, $136 million), Kosuke Fukudome (four years, $48 million) and Milton Bradley (three years, $30 million), who were overpaid and underproduced. Even this season at the trade deadline, he did unload Fukudome, but was otherwise silent, which sparked this screed from our own Matt Snyder, which sounds odd now considering Hendry said he was handcuffed at the time.

Hendry out as Cubs' GM

I hate to pile on, and I hate for a man to lose his job. BUT IT WAS ABOUT TIME ! Forget 2003. The soriano, Fukudome and Zambrano deals killed the Cubs and are still doing it ! I wish there were some way to call Ryne Sandberg and apologize and see if the Phillies will let us talk to him. This of course, after we fire Quade and fix another Hendry mistake !

I'm with ChiCubs31: If Sandberg is unavailable, my next choice for manager is to pull Bob Brenly out of the booth and let him manage. it's a fantasy, but it would be nice to lure Mark Grace in some capacity back to Chicago as well.

Hendry out as Cubs' GM

Hendry has been the worst GM in baseball since he was hired. Shame to see him go.

You're wrong, Tony Reagins, the Angels, GM is by far the worst GM that MLB has ever seen.

Another moron who knows nothing about baseball.  I agree Hendry was terrible and deserved to be shown the door.  It should have happened after last season.  Calling him the worst GM is very inacurrate though.  In nine years the Cubs have won 3 division titles and in 2003 were 5 outs away from the World Series.  There are many, many teams that would take that.  And real Cub fans are the smartest in baseball.

Hendry being fired by the Cubs is the right move. But if u Cubs Fans think that this will fix this club overnight think again. The farm system is depleited and there only two with the potential to be decent players. Cubs fans wants to blame people for not winning a serious or getting swept out of one when the fact of the matter is they choked and choked big time. The new owner has a big task finding the right Gm or finding one who is brave enough to try and deal with rebuilding a franchise, that is in shambles.

Hendry out as Cubs' GM

More awful news. Next thing you know the Cubs will get rid of Soriano. The fans of this team deserve what they get, they are mostly disinterested, go to be seen, know nothing about baseball "fans". I love watching the Cubs get picked to contend every year, and then watch them flame out early and often. Hendry has been the worst GM in baseball since he was hired. Shame to see him go.

Hendry out as Cubs' GM

In fairness to Jim Hendry, he isn't the one who snatched the fly ball to LF from Moises Alou in the 2003 NLCS vs. Florida, a series that the Cubs clearly would have won. He's also not the one who went belly- up against the Dodgers in the 2008 NLDS, which is another series that the Cubs should have probably won.

I am also elated with the firing.  Now if we could just get some winners as coaches. Bob Brenly and Ryne Sandberg to start.  Mark Grace would be a great hitting coach. Greg Maddux as pitching coach.  Or they could bring in Andre Dawson or several others who knows how to win and knows what Cub fans want and need. This has been so long and unbelievable when you have the likes of Florida and Arizona winning the World Series in such a short time.  There is no reason why the Cubs have not been back there. Need someone to come in that will play fundamental baseball.  Especially bunting, sacrificing, hit and run, STEALING a base.  IT IS TIME.
