The Cubs have announced they have fired general manager Jim Hendry. However, during his meeting with the press, Hendry announced the move became official today, but had been told July 22 that he wasn't coming back, but was kept until after the deadline to sign draft picks.

The embattled Cubs general manager had served as the team's general manager since July of 2002.

According to several reports, the Cubs clubhouse was closed before Friday afternoon's game against the Cardinals as Hendry addressed the team.

Asssistant GM Randy Bush will serve as interim general manager.

"My family and I appreciate Jim's dedication during our time with the Cubs and thank him for his overall 17 years of service to the Cubs organization," owner Tom Ricketts said in a press release from the team.  "It is time for a fresh approach in our baseball leadership and our search begins immediately for our next general manager."

Under Hendry, the Cubs went 749-748. He had been with the Cubs since 1994 when he joined the team as director of player development.

Even before Carlos Zambrano's recent meltdown, Hendry was seen as on thin ice with the Cubs. During his tenure, he weighed down the team with hefty contracts to the likes of Zambrano (five years, $91.5 million), Alfonso Soriano (eight years, $136 million), Kosuke Fukudome (four years, $48 million) and Milton Bradley (three years, $30 million), who were overpaid and underproduced. Even this season at the trade deadline, he did unload Fukudome, but was otherwise silent, which sparked this screed from our own Matt Snyder, which sounds odd now considering Hendry said he was handcuffed at the time.

Thank God!! He's been ready to leave for 5 years.  And he saddled the team with long term contracts for guys that were either constantly injured, and therefore useless, or guys that fell far short of expectations.  We all remember bad contracts for Zambrano, Fukedome and Soriano, but what about big contracts for guys like Prior, Wood, Ramirez and D. Lee who tantalized fans with some production but due to injuries were never able to contribute for a full year or at a time when the team could be catapulted into the postseason.  What about all the cheap-costing, over the hill closers that Hendry brought in only to have them be shipped out the next year with the club bleeding money.  Just ridiculous.  Just poor management.  And no wonder that the Cubs couldn't follow their few and far between winning seasons with a string of winning seasons.  Ricketts needs to get some stones and hire a baseball guy who knows talent to retool the roster and draft some young talent.  And if their going to pay through the nose for a free agent get someone who can contribute consistently year in year out.

Hendry out as Cubs' GM

I applaud the Cubs for still taking action with this season gone down the drain for them months ago.  They show a commitment to try and get better.  Look at the Cincinnati Reds putting up with a manager dumber than dirt all year long with all the talent on that team.  Yet the organization takes zero action, keeps a bum like Jonny Gomes on the roster well passed the time they should have released him.  I don't give Jocketty the Reds GM credit for squat and he should be right where Hendry is too, out of a freaken job.  The Reds irritate their fans by living in this dream world, pretend world, that the manager is doing a great job.  What a joke and mockery they have made of a really good historical franchise with a lot of tradition.  The Reds organization has done nothing but penny pinch and hide all year and that toothpick turd in the dugout is a omplete embarassment for the fans and followers who really know baseball.

At least Cub fans can figure out how to use a phone that's more advanced than a green and black screen.  Sox fans are just the dumbest bunch in just about all of sports.

Hendry was shot in the ass by Pinella crushing his young pitching, they never recovered from losing Prior and Wood, sure Wood was able to hang on as a reliever but he was inline for so much more. Put two aces on this team and its completely different. One fan caught foul ball and two arms went bad and thats a wrap.
