The Cubs have announced they have fired general manager Jim Hendry. However, during his meeting with the press, Hendry announced the move became official today, but had been told July 22 that he wasn't coming back, but was kept until after the deadline to sign draft picks.

The embattled Cubs general manager had served as the team's general manager since July of 2002.

According to several reports, the Cubs clubhouse was closed before Friday afternoon's game against the Cardinals as Hendry addressed the team.

Asssistant GM Randy Bush will serve as interim general manager.

"My family and I appreciate Jim's dedication during our time with the Cubs and thank him for his overall 17 years of service to the Cubs organization," owner Tom Ricketts said in a press release from the team.  "It is time for a fresh approach in our baseball leadership and our search begins immediately for our next general manager."

Under Hendry, the Cubs went 749-748. He had been with the Cubs since 1994 when he joined the team as director of player development.

Even before Carlos Zambrano's recent meltdown, Hendry was seen as on thin ice with the Cubs. During his tenure, he weighed down the team with hefty contracts to the likes of Zambrano (five years, $91.5 million), Alfonso Soriano (eight years, $136 million), Kosuke Fukudome (four years, $48 million) and Milton Bradley (three years, $30 million), who were overpaid and underproduced. Even this season at the trade deadline, he did unload Fukudome, but was otherwise silent, which sparked this screed from our own Matt Snyder, which sounds odd now considering Hendry said he was handcuffed at the time.

Hendry out as Cubs' GM

To be honest, it was about 2 years past due.

True.  The reach of his failures will last for a while.  Bad drafts, Soriano's contract on the books for a couple more years, Big Z's contract next year, and so on.

Now, if we could just get some owners in town who want to spend some money, the cubs will be just fine....

I can't say that I didn't see this coming.  To be honest, it was about 2 years past due.  I'm happy that Hendry is gone.  Hopefully now the Cubs can really start to turn the page.  I'm not saying that this will make them overnight successful...far from it.  However, it's a start.  Hopefully Tom Ricketts will bring in the right GM for the team and start the Cubs on the road to the elusive World Series.

Not sure its all his fault, The Cubs do spend the money but always on the wrong players. To bad they couldnt fire the players and start over but with some of there salaries no other team is dumb enough to take on those marginal players.

all in all the guy did a pretty good job.  The Cubs were competitive through many of his years.  Best of luck in the next chapter for him.

It's a nice start, when is the rest of the organization going to be fired?  That's the only thing that will make them better.  Close it down, pack up your tent, and go.

Thanks for the efforts Jim.  Can't help that your players didn't perform.  At least you tried.  More than I can say about some other ball clubs.

As for "What Next?"

Has anyone heard anything about what GREG MADDUX'S aspirations are?  I now he's involved with the ball club, but could he be perhaps...the next in line?

He should of been s-canned the day he signed that crazy arse idiot milton bradley to a three year/30M contract.

That Fosucky FUdome contract didn't impress me either.

This guy spent recklessly like that trust fund tramp Paris Hilton.

Horrible GM good riddance.

Shocked Ricketts had the stones to oust this turd.

Hope after all.

Not going to help. Cubs will be the dregs of the league for a while longer.
