The Cubs have announced they have fired general manager Jim Hendry. However, during his meeting with the press, Hendry announced the move became official today, but had been told July 22 that he wasn't coming back, but was kept until after the deadline to sign draft picks.

The embattled Cubs general manager had served as the team's general manager since July of 2002.

According to several reports, the Cubs clubhouse was closed before Friday afternoon's game against the Cardinals as Hendry addressed the team.

Asssistant GM Randy Bush will serve as interim general manager.

"My family and I appreciate Jim's dedication during our time with the Cubs and thank him for his overall 17 years of service to the Cubs organization," owner Tom Ricketts said in a press release from the team.  "It is time for a fresh approach in our baseball leadership and our search begins immediately for our next general manager."

Under Hendry, the Cubs went 749-748. He had been with the Cubs since 1994 when he joined the team as director of player development.

Even before Carlos Zambrano's recent meltdown, Hendry was seen as on thin ice with the Cubs. During his tenure, he weighed down the team with hefty contracts to the likes of Zambrano (five years, $91.5 million), Alfonso Soriano (eight years, $136 million), Kosuke Fukudome (four years, $48 million) and Milton Bradley (three years, $30 million), who were overpaid and underproduced. Even this season at the trade deadline, he did unload Fukudome, but was otherwise silent, which sparked this screed from our own Matt Snyder, which sounds odd now considering Hendry said he was handcuffed at the time.

Rejoice

This is possibly the best news in a decade for Cubs fans. Now please take Zambrano and Soriano with you.

The signings are not even the worst thing, its our drafts that have been killing us. Hendry was a bust factory.

Hendry out as Cubs' GM

This is the stupidest post I've ever seen.  You say he should have been fiired in 2003??  For what??  Winning the division and coming 5 outs away from the World Series??  He made a great move trading to get Nomar in 2004, who had a freak injury so we never knew how that would have progressed, along with Mark Prior.  For sure he needs to move on now based off his most recent moves...but there's no way you were asking him to leave in 2003-2004 when they were favored to win the World Series.  Please think before you write these things down next time.

Redseat, while this is true, owner "should" have the final say in who is signed. however, the players mentioned in the article (Zambrano, Soriano, Fukudome, and Bradley) were signed prior to Ricketts taking over, unless i am mistaken....

Ricketts Just Bought the Club

How did you get 98 level??????? Wake up! Tribune Corp had it and sold it in 2009. Ricketts was not there when Soriano was given his contract or Zambrano given his or Fukidome, etc.  Hendry then signed Pena this year and did not hire Sandburg as manager-what an IDIOT!  Look for Quadde to be gone as manager(assigned elsewhere) and bring back Sandberg as manager. Cubs have talent in minors and time to play them. Best players were developed in their farm system(Castro and Barney). Double AA is loaded-Tn won first half. Cub fans will come back now that Hendry is gone and hire Sandberg as manager.

Hendry out as Cubs' GM

I am not sure about this.  Though I thought he did a poor job in the 90's, he did try and spend some money and the year we blew a double play had a great shot at a World Series Championship.  Sometimes that is how the cookie crumbles, but I am interested to see the new direction and how things play out.  Nothing else has worked in the last 108 years.

Hendry out as Cubs' GM

This has been a long time coming for a GM that has made too many moves that have put the Cubs behind the proverbial 8 ball in regards to contract flexibility. He is known around the league as one of the nicest guys out there which makes me feel a little bad for him but he has also built an organization that enables overpaid veteran players to coast for as many years as they have left on their overinflated deals. I would like to wish him luck in whatever he decides to do in the future and say that I am happy he won't be making any more decisions for my favorite baseball team.
