Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Mike Flanagan was found dead at his home, the team announced Wednesday, with two local outlets -- WBAL-TV and WNST.net -- reporting that the 1979 AL Cy Young Award winner took his own life.

Flanagan served in the team's front office from 2002-08 and was also a member of the team's broadcast crew. Flanagan was found dead on his property near his home in Maryland.

"It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of my friend Mike Flanagan earlier this evening," Orioles owner Peter Angelos said in a statement released by the team. "In over a quarter century with the organization, Flanny became an integral part of the Orioles family, for his accomplishments both on and off the field. His loss will be felt deeply and profoundly by all of us with the ballclub and by Orioles fans everywhere who admired him. On behalf of the club I extend my condolences to his wife, Alex; and daughters Kerry, Kathryn and Kendall."

The Baltimore Sun reported that a body had been reported on Flanagan's property on Wednesday afternoon, but a police spokeswoman did not confirm the identity of the body, but did say police had not spoken to Flanagan.

Flanagan, 59, won the Cy Young Award in 1979 and was a member of the Orioles' 1983 World Series championship team. In parts of 18 seasons, Flanagan went 167-143 with a 3.90 ERA. He also pitched for the Blue Jays from 1987-90. In 1979 he went 23-9 with a 3.08 ERA to win the award as the American League's top pitcher.

Flanagan also spent time as a member of the team's broadcast crew and in the team's front office.

"It's just shock right now," former Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey told the Baltimore Sun. "I know everybody that played with him loved him to death. He was the backbone of that pitching staff. He never quit — this guy never quit. He was there for the duration. We had so many great games and so many great times. I just can't believe it."

Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, who wears the same number Flanagan wore in Baltimore (46), tweeted after he picked up the win against the Twins on Wednesday:

Bizona from Boston,

If you have an opinion about this tragedy, state one, otherwise stay in Boston in the unemployment office and continue to collect you pocket change which is more than you are worth.

Hey lamalionsfan the Walking Talking Question Marks,

Nothing you could ever say is for the record because you have a difficult enough challenge just trying to mumble for and to yourself.  I do believe in God as well but I can say that the good lord would not waste the time to bail out a lost soul like you, your lazy Mommy, or even your 15 Step Daddy's and if all all sound like you, you all have about a combined equivalent to a 3rd Grade Education.

Bizona or Biz Phoney or whatever your name is, don't crawl out of the slum you are in already, just stay there.  The world is a much better place.

Tramp,

Intellectually?  You first need to know how Tramp.  BTW, "Tramp Like Us" is a darn good name for people like you because not knowing you, only someone with the intellect of a flea could come up with a name like that.

Jobu Voodoo: Apparently you have never heard of free will.

Oh yeah, I have. I'm not a big Rush fan, but that's a good song.

It's a sad story regardless of your religious views.  His wife and daughters will struggle with this loss for a long time.  I am against suicide but I will not judge Mike Flannagan.  GOD will judge him.  I am saddened by the fact that he MAY HAVE committed suicide because he preferred to die than to live on with whatever his situation was.  This is a man who did a lot of good for many people, regardless of his successes or failures in his playing/working career.  People like him deserve to be helped by somebody (ANYBODY) in desperate times.  If you love someone or care about someone you COULD be the one to save him/her from suicide.

THIS IS THE LESSON TO LEARNED HERE.  SEEK HELP if you are depressed and considering suicide.  GIVE HELP if you think someone you know might be considering suicide.

What is missing in this discussion is RESPECT.  I can treat an atheist with respect even if I disagree with his views/beliefs.  And I expect (and would demand if face to face) an atheist to RESPECT my right to believe in GOD and express my beliefs.  What is so difficult about that?

If you really enjoy reading and submitting posts on these message boards frequently can't you at least demonstrate a minimal level of intelligence and respect?

Otherwise, this site becomes a slum, a ghetto, a cyber-gutter, a cesspool of disease and venom.... it becomes like a HELL on Earth.  Whether you believe in HELL or not, trash-talk, disrespect, racism, etc is just a tiny sample of what it is like there.

God or no God ?  We don't really know now whether
he exists or will know after we breathe our last breath.
So if there is a heaven or hell, we wont' recognize
either because we are brain dead. Why even comment
about this subject ! Besides, how can God judge each
of us because we are all not the same or born the same
or growing up under the exact same circumstances.
How ludicrous for God to even consider judging this !
