Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Mike Flanagan was found dead at his home, the team announced Wednesday, with two local outlets -- WBAL-TV and WNST.net -- reporting that the 1979 AL Cy Young Award winner took his own life.

Flanagan served in the team's front office from 2002-08 and was also a member of the team's broadcast crew. Flanagan was found dead on his property near his home in Maryland.

"It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of my friend Mike Flanagan earlier this evening," Orioles owner Peter Angelos said in a statement released by the team. "In over a quarter century with the organization, Flanny became an integral part of the Orioles family, for his accomplishments both on and off the field. His loss will be felt deeply and profoundly by all of us with the ballclub and by Orioles fans everywhere who admired him. On behalf of the club I extend my condolences to his wife, Alex; and daughters Kerry, Kathryn and Kendall."

The Baltimore Sun reported that a body had been reported on Flanagan's property on Wednesday afternoon, but a police spokeswoman did not confirm the identity of the body, but did say police had not spoken to Flanagan.

Flanagan, 59, won the Cy Young Award in 1979 and was a member of the Orioles' 1983 World Series championship team. In parts of 18 seasons, Flanagan went 167-143 with a 3.90 ERA. He also pitched for the Blue Jays from 1987-90. In 1979 he went 23-9 with a 3.08 ERA to win the award as the American League's top pitcher.

Flanagan also spent time as a member of the team's broadcast crew and in the team's front office.

"It's just shock right now," former Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey told the Baltimore Sun. "I know everybody that played with him loved him to death. He was the backbone of that pitching staff. He never quit — this guy never quit. He was there for the duration. We had so many great games and so many great times. I just can't believe it."

Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, who wears the same number Flanagan wore in Baltimore (46), tweeted after he picked up the win against the Twins on Wednesday:

I like how people refer to "God" like he actually exists. Please people, stop the religious non-sense.

Suicide is selfish. No way around that fact.

Salsero you moron, just because YOUR religion believes that dont push it on others.  Your a sad soul and a heartless one for that.  Go on with your miserable life.  I hope you live a long time because that would be the ultimate punishment for you, a long sad life.

@ DJWTERPS, not sure if you're talking to me or someone else, but if it's me, then I'm sure the feeling is mutual. lol

RAHRAHRavens, in contrast to Salsero, you said what you had to say with class and dignity. I can respect that even though I may not agree with all of it.

'Salsero Boricua'; I'm inferring from your cold remarks that you believe suicide is not only selfish, but undignified as well.  It is playing God without the presence of His will.  If I'm correct that this is what you believe, then I agree with you.  I've always held that very belief myself.

There are several things to keep in perspective here though. One, it is reported that he ended his own life, not yet confirmed.  I'll heed the medical examiner's results over a couple of news outlets' reports and this very writer's blog. Second, just b/c Flanangan may have committed suicide and, by so doing, jeopardized his opportunity for eternal salvation does not mean that we cannot or should not pray for his soul.  Just as we humble earthly creatures know not the will of our Creator, we also cannot possibly know what awaits us after life and how our Creator views our actions.  It is for Him to decide our place in his Kingdom, even if His ultimate will was squandered through an individual's act of suicide. His mercy always prevails. And thusly, compassionate and forgiving members of His worldly Kingdom, I believe, are right to pray for the soul of another.

This is just my personal belief; no disrespect.  If you wish to hate during moments such as these, that is certainly your prerogative.  I might recommend though that if you cannot pray for the soul of a troubled man who imperfectly completed God's will, you at least pray sincerely for the members of his own family who must now carry on without their loved one. That seems to me a greater use of your equally imperfect humanity.

This is very sad to see. Mike Flanagan is in the Rochester Red Wing Hall of Fame as the Red Wings were affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles for what seemed like ever. Twins now.  Flanagan pitched for Rochester in 1975 and 1976, and again in 1987. In reading about him today I learned that his daughter was the fourth ever test tube baby and the first to be born without caesarean section procedure. Now that is a trivia question no one could of known. He was hurt for a lot of the '83 World Series Championship season but was still a member of my favorite baseball playoffs of my childhood. RIR Mike.

I think I'd rather go to hell than be surrounded by all these self-righteous holier-than-thou types. Dealing with that for eternity would be worse than eternal damnation.

Salsero Boricua: This is absurd!!! You can't pray for his soul! Once you committ suicide you bought a your ticket to hell....

Why do religious folks always feel the need to remind us all how unforgiving their gods really are?  Undecided
