Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Mike Flanagan was found dead at his home, the team announced Wednesday, with two local outlets -- WBAL-TV and WNST.net -- reporting that the 1979 AL Cy Young Award winner took his own life.

Flanagan served in the team's front office from 2002-08 and was also a member of the team's broadcast crew. Flanagan was found dead on his property near his home in Maryland.

"It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of my friend Mike Flanagan earlier this evening," Orioles owner Peter Angelos said in a statement released by the team. "In over a quarter century with the organization, Flanny became an integral part of the Orioles family, for his accomplishments both on and off the field. His loss will be felt deeply and profoundly by all of us with the ballclub and by Orioles fans everywhere who admired him. On behalf of the club I extend my condolences to his wife, Alex; and daughters Kerry, Kathryn and Kendall."

The Baltimore Sun reported that a body had been reported on Flanagan's property on Wednesday afternoon, but a police spokeswoman did not confirm the identity of the body, but did say police had not spoken to Flanagan.

Flanagan, 59, won the Cy Young Award in 1979 and was a member of the Orioles' 1983 World Series championship team. In parts of 18 seasons, Flanagan went 167-143 with a 3.90 ERA. He also pitched for the Blue Jays from 1987-90. In 1979 he went 23-9 with a 3.08 ERA to win the award as the American League's top pitcher.

Flanagan also spent time as a member of the team's broadcast crew and in the team's front office.

"It's just shock right now," former Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey told the Baltimore Sun. "I know everybody that played with him loved him to death. He was the backbone of that pitching staff. He never quit — this guy never quit. He was there for the duration. We had so many great games and so many great times. I just can't believe it."

Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, who wears the same number Flanagan wore in Baltimore (46), tweeted after he picked up the win against the Twins on Wednesday:

Former Oriole Mike Flanagan found dead

Those of you who are judging Flanny for being selfish or weak have no clue how devastating depression can be.  If he committed suicide as a result of depression is not a slefish act but one of desperation.  I have known people on the brink of suicide.  I have seen the helplessness.  Would you be as hard on Flanny if he weighed 300 pounds from eating McDonalds Big Macs and died of a heart attack?  Stop judging!

Former Oriole Mike Flanagan found dead

This is unbelieveable. I am just in shock. I have been a O's fan for close to 40 years. In that time, I dont think there has been a more difficult day than today. I am not going to speculate why he would take his own life. All I know is that he was a Oriole, through and through. There are only a handful of guys that have givin more of themselves to this club.

My heart goes out to his family. I cant even imagine the pain of losing a spouse or a parent that way.

R.I.P. Flanny

This world is not for weak people.

I will pray for his Soul that the Lord gives him forgiveness (if this was a suicide.)

He never quit...............except on his family.  Suicide is one of the worst things a person can do.  How could it possibly make the rest of his family feel?

Former Oriole Mike Flanagan found dead

I was devastated when I learned of his death last night during the MASN Orioles postgame show. I'm still devastated... for the whole Orioles family. And especially his own family. Such tragic circumstances and so many questions, We'll never truly understand.

Mike, I pray for your soul. I offer my deepest condolences to your wife and daughters. May they gain strength and take solace knowing that you will be greatly missed but always fondly remembered.

Total shock. A huge loss to the Oriole Family. Reports are he'd been dealing with depression and was takn it hard that people were blaming him for the Orioles failure on the field. Listening to fans call in with awesome Flanny stories. People if your feeling depressed, get help. Flanny you touched alot of lives and its sad you didnt see it that way. RIP....YOU WILL BE MISSED.
