Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Mike Flanagan was found dead at his home, the team announced Wednesday, with two local outlets -- WBAL-TV and -- reporting that the 1979 AL Cy Young Award winner took his own life.

Flanagan served in the team's front office from 2002-08 and was also a member of the team's broadcast crew. Flanagan was found dead on his property near his home in Maryland.

"It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of my friend Mike Flanagan earlier this evening," Orioles owner Peter Angelos said in a statement released by the team. "In over a quarter century with the organization, Flanny became an integral part of the Orioles family, for his accomplishments both on and off the field. His loss will be felt deeply and profoundly by all of us with the ballclub and by Orioles fans everywhere who admired him. On behalf of the club I extend my condolences to his wife, Alex; and daughters Kerry, Kathryn and Kendall."

The Baltimore Sun reported that a body had been reported on Flanagan's property on Wednesday afternoon, but a police spokeswoman did not confirm the identity of the body, but did say police had not spoken to Flanagan.

Flanagan, 59, won the Cy Young Award in 1979 and was a member of the Orioles' 1983 World Series championship team. In parts of 18 seasons, Flanagan went 167-143 with a 3.90 ERA. He also pitched for the Blue Jays from 1987-90. In 1979 he went 23-9 with a 3.08 ERA to win the award as the American League's top pitcher.

Flanagan also spent time as a member of the team's broadcast crew and in the team's front office.

"It's just shock right now," former Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey told the Baltimore Sun. "I know everybody that played with him loved him to death. He was the backbone of that pitching staff. He never quit — this guy never quit. He was there for the duration. We had so many great games and so many great times. I just can't believe it."

Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, who wears the same number Flanagan wore in Baltimore (46), tweeted after he picked up the win against the Twins on Wednesday:

Former Oriole Mike Flanagan found dead

What a sad shame this is. If everything is true about Mike Flanagan taking his own life then I am deeply saddened and my admiration for the greed and sport of baseball has now dropped a few more notches.
Mike you need to know this, you were admirably trying to fight a money hungry green boggie monster that keeps growing by the second, all the while perverting the beloved sport of baseball. It wasn't your fault that your attempts to turn-around an beloved organization back to its winning ways fell by the waste side. 14 years of below 500 losing baseball. Mike I don't know if you or Jesus himself would of be able to try and form one winning season in Baltimore. Until the game realizes that it needs to change it ways and make a system more balanced and less full of greed well stuff like this could happen. I am not sure if I really want to go to the Ballpark that I LOVE anymore. It is really hard to do that.

Excellent tribute! Glad you were able to meet and spend time with him. He pitched when I was growing up.

So very sad. These guys are just people and it's sad to hear he felt he let down the Oriole fans. Should teach us fans a lesson. They work hard...they do their best. We shouldn't be so hard...ESPECIALLY when posting comments on sites like these.

I join you in prayer for his family and friends.

This is a hard one to understand.  My Twins were playing the Orioles tonight and didn't learn about this until after the game.  Bert Blyleven tryed his best to explain what happened, and how great of a man this was, but I think most need some time to figure this one out.  I hope this all gets worked out in the right way, and peace to his family!

Former Oriole Mike Flanagan found dead

About 5 years ago during the NCAA basketball tournament I was watching tOSU play and started ranting to the guy next to me how I was from Michigan, lived in Columbus for a couple years and how much I hated Ohio State.  He laughed and then we talked sports for about 3 or 4 hours and had some beers.  We had some great talks about sports in general, MLB and steroids, Barry Bonds, Steve Bechler, etc.  Guy tells me he had to go talk with the GM from Seattle and make a couple other calls and that he would be back in 20 min or so.  I asked him who he was afterwards and that man's name was Mike Flanagan.  He was such a down to earth guy, no ego nor arrogance.  Just a genuine nice guy who loved sports.  I will never forget how cool Mike Flanagan was to me and it really hurts to know he was hurting this bad.  I wish things could've been different for him, he really touched my life in the 3 hours or so that we hung out at that tiki bar on Fort Lauderdale beach.  He told me how many hours he worked a week as a GM and how much energy and passion he put into it.  I remember telling all my friends and family about the experience and how exciting it was to be able to talk MLB and have some beers with a MLB GM.  I hope he is in a better place and I pray that his family, friends and fans are also ok.  He really was a special guy.  Rest in peace Mike.

Wow... what a shocker. I met Alex and Mike quite a few years back at an Arcade auction, brought a Jukebox to their house and they were the best. He showed me his Cy Young , we BS'd about pitching, they showed me their land and their horses, and then Alex hung out with me all day at the Auction.....really nice people !! My condolences go out to Alex and the rest of their family.

It's to bad Flanagan believed the dopes in B-More blamed him for how terrible that team is, May he rest in Peace, Now if only that crappy owner P.A. would feel some guilt. Who knows, just saying, maybe the team would be better off if the owner followed suit. So hard to watch a storied team be run so poorly.
