The New York Mets will host the Chicago Cubs for the Sunday night game in New York on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. In commemoration of so many brave souls who either gave their lives or put their lives on the line to try and save other Americans, the Mets have an assortment of NYPD, FDNY and PAPD (that one is Port Authority PD) hats to honor the service men and women. They were going to wear them during the game, which will be seen on ESPN.

Instead, Major League Baseball intervened. The Mets released the following statement:

“MLB set a league-wide policy as it related to caps and uniforms for September 11 and we followed the guidelines.”

There was reportedly some discussion by the Mets players to just ignore the mandate and wear the hats anyway, but they ended up calling off the idea.

"As much as we would like to as a team," player representative Josh Thole said (Ledger_NYMets on Twitter). "MLB is coming down really hard on it."

I don't think there's really much more to say than it's too bad that the MLB can't make an exception here -- especially considering all those stars and stripes hats teams wear on the 4th of July and Memorial Day.

UPDATE: The decision was apparently made by MLB Vice President Joe Torre, who was the Yankees manager on 9/11. He said he just wanted teams to be "consistent" and in this situation, "certainly it's not a lack of respect." (David Lennon via Twitter)

it is okay to wear a LOS MLB jersey during a game to recognize the plight of illegal aliens in the USA,
Did Lou Dobbs tell you this?  Because the "Los" jerseys have nothing to do with illegal aliens.

I feel the MLB blew this one... who cares about the money in this situtaion all the mets wanted to do was pay their respects to the lost, hurt, brave first responders who were doing everything in there power to save lives and for-go saving their own. I remember in 2001 i was 9 and living in New Jersey and could see the towers fall and the smoke and the nasty smell but when the mets took the field i dont remember much but Mike Piazza's home run to put them ahead and John Franco wearing his dads sanation workers shirt (under his jersey) and his FDNY had.... i couldnt tell you what jerseys they wore or who even started that game but i remember those hats and when i was 9 i thought it was the coolest thing and wanted to go get an FDNY had to show my support i feel that the MLB blew this one let the players show their respect and make them wear liscened hats the 161 other games they play.

I now offically don't care about baseball.  America's Pastime..........B.S.  Bud, you and the clowns you have running the show are a bunch of greedy S.O.Bs and care more about the mercandising $$ than remembering and honoring one of the worst days in the history of our county.  You could learn a few thing about patriotism from the NFL.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Thats what matters, MLB can't profit off 9/11, and could care less about the victims... unless they can make a buck.

When are people and professional athletes going to learn that once in a while you have to CHALLENGE AUTHORITY! Screw MLB and Torre for their "consistency" crap. Like many other people have said, it is okay to wear a LOS MLB jersey during a game to recognize the plight of illegal aliens in the USA, but you cannot wear a NYPD hat during a commerative 09/11 game in New York. C'mon players, what is MLB going to do to you? Throw a fine out....Pleeeeeze... Somebody out their nut up once every blue moon and put these "officials" on notice... You let a bunch these jackass players wear their hat to left or right to show their allegance to the west coast or east coast..It is gang related, yet you do nothing about it...They also wear one pant leg up and the other down for the same representation of the hat....Wake up MLB this is why you have lost your fans to the NFL! A much better product, relaxed rules, yet harsher punishment if you don't fly right...
