MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

The New York Mets will host the Chicago Cubs for the Sunday night game in New York on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. In commemoration of so many brave souls who either gave their lives or put their lives on the line to try and save other Americans, the Mets have an assortment of NYPD, FDNY and PAPD (that one is Port Authority PD) hats to honor the service men and women. They were going to wear them during the game, which will be seen on ESPN.

Instead, Major League Baseball intervened. The Mets released the following statement:

“MLB set a league-wide policy as it related to caps and uniforms for September 11 and we followed the guidelines.”

There was reportedly some discussion by the Mets players to just ignore the mandate and wear the hats anyway, but they ended up calling off the idea.

"As much as we would like to as a team," player representative Josh Thole said (Ledger_NYMets on Twitter). "MLB is coming down really hard on it."

I don't think there's really much more to say than it's too bad that the MLB can't make an exception here -- especially considering all those stars and stripes hats teams wear on the 4th of July and Memorial Day.

UPDATE: The decision was apparently made by MLB Vice President Joe Torre, who was the Yankees manager on 9/11. He said he just wanted teams to be "consistent" and in this situation, "certainly it's not a lack of respect." (David Lennon via Twitter)

They want us to forget what happened, that's unpatriotic what they did.

Joe Torre needs to come up with a better excuse as to why the Mets could not have worn those special hats. If they can do it on July 4th then why not on 9/11? In fact I think all MLB teams should have done something more to pay homage to the events that took place. If the NFL can hold the the american flag on the field before game time then why not MLB teams to the same on their fields also. On every field it should have been "2 teams united as 1".

Consistency!!!  Really?!?!?!?!  You strut out those awful Los Mets unis and you're gonna talk about consistency?  Kudos to the NFL for allowing players to wear tributes and their kleets and gloves and for letting the sunday night game (and tom coughlin during the day) participants wear the FDNY hats on the sidelines.

Just a classic example of how the NFL gets it and MLB is simply clueless

MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

On a day when baseball could have been a feel better moment, they went the d-bag route on a nationally televised game that had absolutely no playoff implications. The Cowboys Jets Game in New York, both head-coaches wore NYFD hats on TV. Screw you MLB! You could have shown a non-NY market game with some playoff implications if you wanted to down play any 9/11 sentiment. OR you could have had all teams playing Sunday wear some form of commemorative hat so your precious uniform policy could have been preserved. but hold on, did all teams wear Spanish Language uniforms a while back? How is that a loophole in your policy? I would have liked to have seen what type of reprimand MLB would have doled out had any of the Mets players chose to wear the non standard caps anyway.

Joe Torre always was an a__hole. He is behind times, maybe if he was in the service or did something for the USA instead of worring about how to make more money for himself he would see what a mistake he made. They make a big deal over #42's birthday, but not the day 3,000 people died, to hell with baseball.

Very Well Said...I am a Yankee Fan and always have been but he blew this one bigtime... As a natural Yankee Fan, I cannot stand the Mets but was rooting for them to win that game last night in the Bottom of the 9th...One of the only times in my Life I have ever rooted for the Mets and they wound up losing anyway unfortunately...But they should've been allowed to wear the Hats

Does it really matter as much knowing that the hats are all made in China?
