MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

The New York Mets will host the Chicago Cubs for the Sunday night game in New York on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. In commemoration of so many brave souls who either gave their lives or put their lives on the line to try and save other Americans, the Mets have an assortment of NYPD, FDNY and PAPD (that one is Port Authority PD) hats to honor the service men and women. They were going to wear them during the game, which will be seen on ESPN.

Instead, Major League Baseball intervened. The Mets released the following statement:

“MLB set a league-wide policy as it related to caps and uniforms for September 11 and we followed the guidelines.”

There was reportedly some discussion by the Mets players to just ignore the mandate and wear the hats anyway, but they ended up calling off the idea.

"As much as we would like to as a team," player representative Josh Thole said (Ledger_NYMets on Twitter). "MLB is coming down really hard on it."

I don't think there's really much more to say than it's too bad that the MLB can't make an exception here -- especially considering all those stars and stripes hats teams wear on the 4th of July and Memorial Day.

UPDATE: The decision was apparently made by MLB Vice President Joe Torre, who was the Yankees manager on 9/11. He said he just wanted teams to be "consistent" and in this situation, "certainly it's not a lack of respect." (David Lennon via Twitter)

MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

Bottom line, the NFL got it right and MLB failed miserably.  Though I was a little surprised that more NFL players weren't wearing the 9/11 memorial shoes and gloves yesterday.

MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

Kazoo got it right. This game was obviously scheduled as part of the tribute to the many who perished that tragic day ten years ago. Not to let a NEW YORK team wear hats, i mean hats, is absurd. For a guy who manged the Yankees ten years ago, and experienced first hand what this city went through, what was he thinking? Remarkable that he could be so short sighted.

MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

MLB decision simply makes no sense and is totally classless, they have embarrassed themselves. Torre needs to go to confession that is if he can get a priest to listen to this sin, unforgivable. And Selig, we know about him. Decision is totally inconsistent as pointed out in posts. Remakable, truly remarkable. National pastime, national tragedy of monumental proportions=no commerative hats for one game on ten year anniversary honoring the fallen brave. Words can hardly convey.

It's a good thing the game of baseball exists to save MLB from its poor decisions.

If the Yankees wanted to do the same thing, I'm sure Joe would find a way to make it "appropriate". What a jerkwad.

MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

This is an absolutely outrageous decision by Major League Baseball.  On the tenth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center Joe Torre decides that it is not appropriate to honor the heroes that gave their lives in an attempt to save others.  Torre said in his statement that there was no disrespect intended.  What was it then Joe.  What is so wrong with wearing the hats of the NYPD, FDNY, and the PAPD?  Every year teams wear green hats on St. Patrick's Day.  They wear pink gear on Mother's Day.  They wear hats with special logos for July 4th.  What was wrong with commemorating the tenth anniversary of that tragic day.  Joe, you got it wrong here.  You should be ashamed, and your boss, Bud Selig, well, why would we expect anything else from him.

MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

Hey Joe, the Mets are 24 1/2 games out of first in their division and the Cubs are 21 games out of first in their division.  Why did MLB schedule this game as the Sunday night game?  I don't know for sure, but I am going to guess MLB scheduled that game as the Sunday night game because it was the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 and the game was being played in New York so MLB could honor all the people affected, the victims, the first responders, the city of New York and the United States of America.  And you make a decision to not let them wear NYPD, FDNY and PAPD hats?!  I guess it's ok to wear red, white and blue hats certain days and use pink bats certain days but not to wear these hats on the 10 year anniversary of probably the most memorable day in the history of the US.

The NFL got it right, MLB did not...

Great decision, Joe!

MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

You should be hung in public for such asinine decision making !
Joe Torre should be publicly executed because of his opinion on what hats baseball teams should wear?

For a minute there I was worried people were overreacting to this whole thing.  It's good to see calm, rational discussion once again taking place on this topic.

MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

It is a Shame Joe Torre used this as an opportunity to draw attention to himself, and as a reminder of his power, than to let people honor those who died or risked their lives on such a tragic day.... especially in a city where it means so much to so many people.
