MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

The New York Mets will host the Chicago Cubs for the Sunday night game in New York on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. In commemoration of so many brave souls who either gave their lives or put their lives on the line to try and save other Americans, the Mets have an assortment of NYPD, FDNY and PAPD (that one is Port Authority PD) hats to honor the service men and women. They were going to wear them during the game, which will be seen on ESPN.

Instead, Major League Baseball intervened. The Mets released the following statement:

“MLB set a league-wide policy as it related to caps and uniforms for September 11 and we followed the guidelines.”

There was reportedly some discussion by the Mets players to just ignore the mandate and wear the hats anyway, but they ended up calling off the idea.

"As much as we would like to as a team," player representative Josh Thole said (Ledger_NYMets on Twitter). "MLB is coming down really hard on it."

I don't think there's really much more to say than it's too bad that the MLB can't make an exception here -- especially considering all those stars and stripes hats teams wear on the 4th of July and Memorial Day.

UPDATE: The decision was apparently made by MLB Vice President Joe Torre, who was the Yankees manager on 9/11. He said he just wanted teams to be "consistent" and in this situation, "certainly it's not a lack of respect." (David Lennon via Twitter)

I used to respect Joe Torre.  Maybe if MLB had temporarily licensed the NYPD, PAPD and FDNY logos and had time to arrange for the hats to be made in Malaysia or Mexico (anywhere but in the U.S.A.) they'd have OK'd the idea of wearing the hats.  This smells of crass commercialism.  Anyway, it smells.

I am fine with this decision!  It's been ten years already how many years before you start to live your life again.  The hypocrisy of licensed merchandise isn't going away any time soon.  Maybe the fact I've seen 6 9/11 documentaries today has affected my view but I'm once again reached my limit for baseless platitudes.

It would kind of make sense, but they let The Yankees wear Virginia Tech hats after the shootings there. This one leaves a question mark in my head.

Torre is quoted as saying, "It's certainly not a lack of respect". What in the world else could it be Joe ???!!! You should be hung in public for such asinine decision making !1 And let's not let Buddy Butthead commish Selig off the hook either. He had to know of Joe's feelings on this well in advance. He could have overturned Torre's decision. He didn't. Forget both of those classeless jerks !

The heck with Joe Torre, lame stupid Bud Selig and the rest of the idiotic MLB hierarchy ! Sure, it's OK to wear the red, white and blue hats on July 4, because MLB sells them as merchandise !

How can baseball be so callous toward the victims of 911 and their families ?? They act like MLB would be sued by a special interest group or something ! What positive things could you have by telling the NY teams not to wear the special hats to commemorate our fallen brethren ??? It's ridiculous ! And shameful. But I guess that's what to expect from a sport who didn't even bother to hold the World Series in 1994 because of a players' strike !

So, Torre just wants teams to be consistent in their uniforms.  Then why make an exception on the 4th of July and Memorial Day when they wore the stars and stripes hats.  That is hardly consistent, ya know?  Hell, 9-11 should be voted a national holiday.

Whatever little respect I had for Joe Torre is now gone.  People with power just love to lord if over anyone under them.  Maybe if we wore Joe Torre hats we could break the stupid uniform rule.
