MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

The New York Mets will host the Chicago Cubs for the Sunday night game in New York on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. In commemoration of so many brave souls who either gave their lives or put their lives on the line to try and save other Americans, the Mets have an assortment of NYPD, FDNY and PAPD (that one is Port Authority PD) hats to honor the service men and women. They were going to wear them during the game, which will be seen on ESPN.

Instead, Major League Baseball intervened. The Mets released the following statement:

“MLB set a league-wide policy as it related to caps and uniforms for September 11 and we followed the guidelines.”

There was reportedly some discussion by the Mets players to just ignore the mandate and wear the hats anyway, but they ended up calling off the idea.

"As much as we would like to as a team," player representative Josh Thole said (Ledger_NYMets on Twitter). "MLB is coming down really hard on it."

I don't think there's really much more to say than it's too bad that the MLB can't make an exception here -- especially considering all those stars and stripes hats teams wear on the 4th of July and Memorial Day.

UPDATE: The decision was apparently made by MLB Vice President Joe Torre, who was the Yankees manager on 9/11. He said he just wanted teams to be "consistent" and in this situation, "certainly it's not a lack of respect." (David Lennon via Twitter)

MLB prevents Mets from wearing 9/11 hats

If anyone can relate to 9/11 it would be Joe Torre. I am shocked to hear that it was he that made the call on these hats. These men are hero's and should be celebrated on this day. I am a Canadian and it brings tears to my eyes when I watch the tape of what happened on that brutal day. To wear a hat in their honar is such a small tolken of the appreciation wh should all give to these men and woman. I think this call is a joke on a day we should not be joking.

PHILLIES AND BREWERS

The Phillies and Brewers had American Flag Patches on the back of their jerseys.  Did all the other teams have this too?
I did not get to see highlights of other games and wasn't sure.  This was a very bad call by Joe Torre on the 10th anniversary
of 9/11.  This would have been a way for MLB to remember the people that died that unfortunate day too but I guess JOE FORGOT.

I can't believe Joe Torre would make such a call.  Ridiculous.  Bad move, Joey T.

Yea MLB failed on this one for sure. I know some of the NFL players who did it were auctioning off the stuff they wore today for charity to help families and such was a good thing. Torre failed but also Selig because you know he could have overturned this if he wanted. Both are garbage and should be replaced.

I was very surprised when I read the headline. Even more surprised when I saw it was Torre's call. Say it ain't so Joe.

Mets should have been allowed to do this in honour of those who fell that day, conformity be damned. There's a time and place for everything.

That would have been awesome these people take the whole "uniform"ity thing way too seriousily. Why not change things up and be relevant once awhile?

This is such a joke -- the decision that Torre makes is bad enough, but than he goes and adds the reason is that it is a question of consistency and not a lack of respect. Poor decision and poor choice of words -- the way to show respect was to let the teams wear the hats and play the game in honor of those brave men and woman who serve everyday to protect and preserve life.
