Red Sox GM says bring on the Rays

Theo EpsteinBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Boston's David Ortiz says it's time to panic, but general manager Theo Epstein said he welcomes playing the Rays four more times over the season's last two weeks.

Appearing on Boston's WEEI, Epstein said the team is struggling, but it's an opportunity to turn it around. But if they don't do it, they don't deserve to be in the playoffs.

From WEEI.com:

"I'm glad we play the Rays four times coming up. If we can't right the ship against these guys, if we can't do what we need to do, we probably don't deserve to get into the postseason," Epstein said. "As much as this looks like a crisis from the outside and obviously has not been fun on the inside, this is an opportunity. If we are what we think we are, to quote somebody else, then this is a great opportunity for us to go play well for 2½ weeks, ride some momentum into the postseason and be the team that we were for four months, the best team in baseball over four months. We have to go do that."

Epstein also touches on John Lackey (it's "frustrating"), Dustin Pedroia, J.D. Drew (he has a broken finger), Clay Buchholz's rehab (he may pitch out of the bullpen in the playoffs) and any possible moves the team can make in the last couple of weeks of the season, but the Cubs are not brought up.

In the excitement that notes the Rays have four more games against the Red Sox, it should be noted they have seven more games against the Yankees, as well -- and despite some delusional daydreams by fanboys, the Yankees aren't going to just lay down to screw over the Red Sox.

Red Sox GM says bring on the Rays

Theo Epstein is clearly delusional. He's got a regular starting pitcher with an ERA over 6.Wakefield's is over 5 & the Rays get a shot at him tonight-In Fenway. The Rays know what's at stake; So do the Red Sox.Boston's played like everythings fine all year, never worrying about the bad baseball they've played at the beginning & end of the season. Why should anyone expect them to turn on the intensity now.Beside's you can't just turn that stuff on or off when you feel like it.
Their best pitcher,Lester, couldn't beat the Rays. What makes Theo think Wake or Lackey or a broken down Beckett can beat them?I'd love to see the Rays take 3 of 4 or 4 of 4 just to knock these overpaid losers down a peg.Same goes for the Yankees.
I've been a  Red Sox fan since '66 & the best thing that could happen to this team would be to miss the playoffs entirely. They need to learn they are not as good as they think they are; They are in a battle for the WC with a team that has  1/5 of Boston's payroll. With the exception of Ellsbury & Ortiz,I don't think Theo's getting his moneys worth.

Pretty much your entire post is laughable and meaningless because you obviously are such a huge fan that you have no idea how to even look at a schedule of your Red Sox.  Jays in Fenway for two starting tonight.  bUT i'M SURE YOU'RE DEAD ON WITH ALL OF YOUR OTHER ANALYSIS.

What delusional daydreamers think the Yankees are going to roll over for Tampa to screw Boston (last line in the article).
Hello... they still have a division to win.

Everybody points to Boston's games against Baltimore, but those losing teams are BY FAR the most dangerous to the contenders. Those teams ALWAYS get fired up to play spoiler.

Looking forward to the series against Boston very much.

By the way.. Boston isnt going to overtake NY for the division.
If Boston finishes 11-5, (which at this point, I dont know if they can even do that the way they are playing) NY can go 8-8 and still win the division.

Good luck.
Oh yeah.. and 7 games against Baltimore is not 7 wins either.
I know they suck, but they have a tendency to play spoiler on Boston.
I bet Boston goes no better than 4-3 in those games.

So without the Yankees laying down - a 4-3 split either way - in the 7 game series with the Rays could mean they both miss the playoffs. Boston carried in by Baltimore, and California and Texas edging the East's other two at the gate.

WHAT???

You think Boston is going to pass NY and then NY will be out in the cold??
That's pretty funny.
If NY splits 4-3 or 3-4 with Tampa, that's nowhere near enough for Anaheim (not California by the way) to catch up.
Do the math dumbass. There's only 16 games left.
If Anaheim goes 15-0 to finish the season (which won't happen) NY only needs to go 7-9 to beat them by 1 game.

Doh!
