Albert Pujols' future in St. Louis isn't assured, but Lance Berkman's is. The team announced that it has agreed to a one-year extension with Berkman worth $12 million, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (via Twitter).

The 35-year-old is the favorite for the National League Comeback Player of the Year award, hitting .300/.412/.555 with 31 home runs and 91 RBI for the Cardinals this season. He's mostly played right field for St. Louis, but could return to his former first base spot if Pujols leaves in free agency.

"Lance proved to be everything we were looking for when we signed him last December," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement released by the team. “He’s an impact player who helped solidify our everyday lineup while also bringing a wealth of experience to our team.  We are excited to announce that he is going to remain a part of our team in 2012."

Earlier this week there were reports that Berkman's negotiations had slowed and he told reporters "it's always about the money."

He got paid.

Berkman signed with the Cardinals to a one-year deal before the season for $8 million.

Yes, Berkman had 24 HRs at the "break" and 7 after but the slash numbers are very comparable:

Before AS .290/.404./602   24 HR, 63 RBI
Post AS    .314/.424/.490   7 HR, 28 RBI

#1 The season is about 60% complete when the break happens so everyone's numbers look worse in the second half
#2 At age 35, 36 a .300/.400./.500 is worth $12 million.  All you care about is that his average is still up, he's still getting on base 3rd best in the league, and he's still providing extra base pop.

I almost wish we'd given him a 2-year $21 million deal like Carp got.

Cardinals, Berkman agree to 1-year extension

this is the the retard comment for the day .  by GO Zips ...

BERKMAN called the Astros asked to come back last year after the Yankees stint was a dud . Astros said no thanks ...

Berkman then called the Cardinals and said St Louis is the best place to play baseball and as an Astros for 10 years EVERYONE knows STL is the classiest run organization with the best fans and is considered Baseball Mecca ..
Berkman asked " do you guys need me " to the Cards . The  organization they asked him can you get in shape and can you play RF ?

Berkman said YES ..... Berkman signing for one year when he can get a 2 year deal with an American league team to DH . is a clear indication of the love for the City and the Cardinals !

Getting 12 million is the Cardinals rewarding him for a wonderful bounce back year ..

your comment has now been proven null and void .

st louis fan, dont break ur arm patting urself on the back.  he said it was about the money and i guarantee if seattle or houston offered more than the cards, he'd be there saying this is where i always wanted to be.

Its not if he'll get hurt... He'll just stop hitting like he did in the 2nd half. He had what - 27 HRs at the break? And has 31 now? I miss Berk, but that production is anything but consistent. Better hope Pujols signs for taht lineup protection.

Lance Berkman is not just a great player.  He is a true presence in the dugout - you can see his enthusiasm is contagious.  His smiles, his pats on the back, just his overall demeanor has been HUGE for the Cardinals this year.  He is a true team leader and I am so happy he is signed for next year.  He WANTS to be here and that is awesome!!!

A true professional. Glad to see he'll be arouind for another year. (Scooped him up Week 1 as a FA and reaped the rewards--hitting machine)
