Major League Baseball will add a wild card team to each league and hold a one-game playoff for each league to determine which wild card advances to the Division Series, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.

Sherman writes that one source told him the new playoff scenario is a "done deal," but another said nothing will be final until the collective bargaining agreement is ratified. The new system will possibly be ready for 2012, but will be implemented no later than 2013.

The report says both the players and owners hope to announce a new CBA during the World Series, although the two sides have not agreed on a slotting system for the draft. The two sides are also trying to finalize the new 15-team leagues with Houston moving to the American League, but that is hung up on the sale of the Astros to Jim Crane.

Report: MLB to add wild card, 1-game playoff

The ones making these decisions are about the same as our politicans in DC.  They don't know anything about running a baseball league except to make more stupid stupids and more money.  The league should go back to the old 154 game schedule.

Give these fools enough time and you won't even recognize the game of baseball.  Enough of this.  But of course money talks and the players and league are both for that.  Sick of it.  It they don't watch out they will lose more fans and less money in their coffers.

It wouldn't surprise me if they lengthen the regular season and allow 3 wild card teams from each league as their next wonderful invention.  And they pay these guys big salaries.   Sheesh.Sealed

The whole plan to just add a wild card is knee-jerk and without any common sense.

There would be 15 teams in each league, with 5 of them having a chance at the playoffs.  I don't even consider the wildcard round making the playoffs.  The winner of that game or series would make the playoffs when they win.

So why not just ditch divisions and have the top 3 make the playoffs based on a balanced schedule, and have the true 4th and 5th best teams play a best-of-3 on the final weekend of the season?  It only makes 100% common sense.

Advantages:

-Eliminate the strong division/weak division thing.  You earn your way in by winning.  Arbitrary geographical divisions make NO SENSE when this many teams have a chance at the playoffs.

-Free the Orioles, Rays, and Blue Jays from the AL East completely.  Yes, the Rays have been competitive, but let's not fool ourselves about this long term.

-Reward the best teams over 6 months of games, based on an equal schedule.  That means the top-3 make the playoffs and are seeded in the right order.

-Player awards would be easier to evaluate based on a balanced schedule.

-Shortening the season to 156 would enable the rest of the playoffs to go best-of-7 and still finish in October.

The only way to expand the playoffs and not screw it up is by eliminating divisions.  The "gotta win your division" people need to see the bigger picture.

I really do not understand why a better team should always play a worse team in a 1-game play-off in the first place.  The idea seems like a screw-you sitch for the leading WC team actually.  That is backwards thinking.  Whomever thought this up should be fired if it goes through.  No point actually getting the better record.

The best record of the 2 wildcards wouldnt be completely worthless. In a 1 game playoff game you want home field advantage if possible.

I like the idea of adding an extra wildcard. It helps teams like the Blue Jays, Rays, Angels actually all the mid to low market teams. But NO way should it be decided in ONE game it would have to be a best two of three. I say start the season a week early so that it ends a week early, then shorten the season a mere TWO games from 162 to 160, that way there is time to actually play the wildcard playoff series. I understand that sometimes a wildcard team would have a better record than some division winners but hey thats how it is now, so adding another wildcard doesn't change that. Also having a wildcard playoff series is a good idea because the wildcard team should have a disadvantage in the next round against the teams ahead of them. I just think a one game playoff is not smart. if there is going to be a wild card playoff round it HAS TO BE BEST TWO OUT OF THREE. The results of one game is just too random and it favors the team with the single best pitcher. The winner should be the best wildcard team not the team with the single best pitcher.IMO

Yet another rule that takes away the emphasis on the regular season. What a joke.
