Cora, Guillen

By Evan Brunell

Even though Ozzie Guillen is gone, the drama continues in Chicago. Interim manager Joey Cora, who is considered a strong candidate to manage somewhere one day, was fired by text message before managing his first game for the White Sox, the Chicago Sun-Times writes.

GM Kenny Williams replaced Cora (pictured, left, with Guillen) with pitching coach Don Cooper, texting Cora and telling him not to bother coming to the park. That's quite an odd development. There hasn't been any news as to the reasoning, but it appears as if the firing was related to Guillen, who managed his final game with the White Sox Monday night and is headed to Florida to manage. Cora is expected to join Guillen in Florida, so it's possible Williams didn't want anyone managing his team for them to leave after the year and follow the just-fired manager. You can understand that rationale.

Cora was the bench coach under Guillen in Chicago, while Don Cooper was in his ninth season as pitching coach. Cooper is expected to interview for the full-time managerial opening. Given the success of Bud Black in San Diego and now John Farrell in Toronto, it's possible Cooper could get the job after decades of pitching coaches never really being considered for the opening. However, the White Sox could also lure back ex-manager Tony La Russa or go in a different direction. No matter what happens, Cooper's job as a pitching coach is safe -- whether in Chicago or elsewhere -- as he's one of the best at his profession.

White Sox fire interim manager before first game

Aww poor Kenny Williams.  Ozzie finally got the last laugh and Kenny couldn't deal with it so he immaturely fired Cora via text message.  As a Cubs fan I love seeing the White Sux flounder and Williams get his due.

Since Adam Dunn can not hit American League pitching and no one in the NL wants him at  1st Base, perhaps he should manage the Sox

Wedge should be fired and Cora should be the Mariners coach.  Seriously, how many times does he have to interview and impress before Cora becomes the manager?  Stop being dumb, he's a fan favorite, and a good coach.

White Sox fire interim manager before first game

@TMZ75 phewww I'm glad I dont have to write about this thoroughly since its already being pointed out. THis is bad journalism and very poor reporting from a usually credible CBS albeit they get some info to youze fantasy slowpokes a minute or too late.

Kenny Williams and Cora came to a mutual agreement that Cora would not interim the managerial position for the remaining two game of the regular season.  It looks clear with the long and good history between Cora and Ozzie Guillen that Cora with maybe one or two other coaches from Ozzie's regime could possibly follow him down to cubano americano and the theme park known as Lebron land due to that most other coaches on the staff have contracts up this year with Ozzie's originally being up at the end of the next season.  Problem is your trying to squeeze blood from a stone the conclusion of Ozzie & Comp. departure is good for both sides and certainly better handled now then a quarter of the way through next season and Chi White Sox end up in a situation pathetic as America's favorite non-franchise The Cubs and the Sweet Lou Debacle where he clearly didnt want to show up to work on a daily basis.

I love you Ozzie(bottom line he is one the best baseball minds breathing today period!), I'm also a Kenny Willams fan he's a young go-getter in the realm of GM's and Im always excited while awaiting what his next move(s) will be even with some poor report cards remember may have been some leftover schuler?SPelling, pieces that were the core of the 05 squad but he was the GM none the less.  I commend the Owner Jerry Reinsdorf for making the tough call and executing on this issue Jerry has alot of respect for both these men but I get the feeling there may have been some dissension amongst the ranks (Ozzie guillens kids public tirades via twitter/radio) amongst a few other incidents may have strained the hierarchy in the clubhouse and they made the Jerry let Ozzie out of his contract to rope back in control for thier image(ya know 6-yr removed from WS image, or the all-in image lol) but this allows some of the circus to convoy up and head out of town.

I know I said I didnt have to go through it thoroughly since other ppl are touching on how poor of a story you wrote here Cbs sports and if you asked me I would say I didn't :)

White Sox fire interim manager before first game

I'm not defending KWs actions, but let's get the facts straight... Per KW - “We had a conversation that we agreed [because] he’s likely to go with Ozzie, and it would have been, in his words, awkward for him to be here,” Williams said. “So I said, ‘That’s not a problem. I get it. Good luck.’ We exchanged pleasantries, and that was it, a three-minute conversation.”  There are plenty of reasons to be critical of Williams without making stuff up. Cora had two days left on his deal and there is nothing here that indicates that he will not get paid for those two days. Don't want to split hairs, but he was NOT FIRED if he got paid, and regardless - it's 2 days.

Bearish1, maybe you should get all of your information right? His contract expires at the end of the season, which is today. He was fired, plain and simple. That being, any reasoning could be valid. Just man up Kenny, and tell Cora face to face. Williams should be the next one out the door.

White Sox fire interim manager before first game

Like I said YESTERDAY - Evan Brunell needs a fact checker. This was a thouroughly incorrect story and journalistically unsound for CBS to post it. Cora was NOT fired by text - hell, Cora wasn't fired at all - his contract expired! One of Ozzie's concerns was that his coaches didn't have contracts for 2012. So, Cora was NOT fired - he was just informed that because of his relationship with Ozzie it would be awkward for him to come into the clubhouse for his last two days. So get it straight Brunell. You tried to make Kenny Williams look like a fool, but the fool was YOU.

Is Cooper sure to have a job because of the great pitching the White Sox have enjoyed the past few years?  Or is it because he gives sportswriters tips behind Ozzie's back?
