White Sox fire interim manager before first game

Cora, Guillen

By Evan Brunell

Even though Ozzie Guillen is gone, the drama continues in Chicago. Interim manager Joey Cora, who is considered a strong candidate to manage somewhere one day, was fired by text message before managing his first game for the White Sox, the Chicago Sun-Times writes.

GM Kenny Williams replaced Cora (pictured, left, with Guillen) with pitching coach Don Cooper, texting Cora and telling him not to bother coming to the park. That's quite an odd development. There hasn't been any news as to the reasoning, but it appears as if the firing was related to Guillen, who managed his final game with the White Sox Monday night and is headed to Florida to manage. Cora is expected to join Guillen in Florida, so it's possible Williams didn't want anyone managing his team for them to leave after the year and follow the just-fired manager. You can understand that rationale.

Cora was the bench coach under Guillen in Chicago, while Don Cooper was in his ninth season as pitching coach. Cooper is expected to interview for the full-time managerial opening. Given the success of Bud Black in San Diego and now John Farrell in Toronto, it's possible Cooper could get the job after decades of pitching coaches never really being considered for the opening. However, the White Sox could also lure back ex-manager Tony La Russa or go in a different direction. No matter what happens, Cooper's job as a pitching coach is safe -- whether in Chicago or elsewhere -- as he's one of the best at his profession.

Classy move Kenny. You couldn't stand Ozzie so you had to get rid of his right hand man with 2 games left? I know you and Cooper are buddies and all, but give me a break. Let the guy manage the last 2 then get rid of him. As the text abbreviations go. GAL. Oh and to the Sox fans out there enjoy Buddy Bell as your next manager.

Kenny Williams is a scumbag!  He can't even call Cora to fire him he has to do it via text.  What an asshole Williams is!  Kenny Williams will be the downfall of Chicago Whitesox baseball.  He simply cannot be trusted.

I can't say I care much for either Ozzie or Williams but at least Ozzie is somewhat entertaining. Williams suffers from a terminal case of the Red Ass. He is always super defensive and can't take any criticism of any kind.

He speaks Spanish. Keith Hernandez, big pusher for Cora, Keith doing a New York Mets game, "Cora will be a great Manager some day." Before he gets the words out of his mouth. Cora gets picked off 2B, I will not swear to it. I believe he was the pinch runner--crucial part of the game.

Did anyone even consider that the text message that Evan Brunell is referring to was a REPLY text?! Like, maybe Joey texted KW and said "Kenny - I want you to know that I will be leaving for Florida after tomorrow's game to join Ozzie." To which KW replies something like "I figured that would be the case. Go ahead. Thanks for everything and don't bother coming in tonight - I'll let Coop handle the last two games."  Brunnell doesn't even try to give us the context of the text firing. I do not agree with a lot of Kenny Williams' ways of handling the team - including his pushing Frank Thomas out the door - but this sounds like a really poor job of reporting.

Great move by Kenny! I was so happy to hear about the news this morning so let Cora follow right behind him! I"ll vote for Cooper as coach even though his interviews are dry!

Sounds like the GM gave the same treatment to Ozzie and Joey the same treatment he showed Frank Thomas , If I was a player or coach I would never want to play for the White Sox at least until they clean house in the offices , maybe still not even then , I use to like this team when I was a kid when Thomas , Raines , Ozzie , Bo Jackson and Thigpen played there , and I am an Astros fan for life , We Astros fans know all about how the front office will treat those special players who put butts in the seats and played well for you , they get traded to the Phillies or other teams for sucky prospects !

Kenny Willams shows that he is classless and should be the one leaving Chicago not Ozzie.

Oh, did little Kenny get his feelings hurt...?  Now he took his ball away, and won't let Joey come over to his house to play anymore.  All because, like most spoiled kids, eventually the money and nice house loses its charm and their supposed "friends" finally tire of them and wander away... Because eventually putting up with their arrogant b.s. is just no longer worth it.

I hope Joey got a good tee time today...  And has a few beers, and maybe catches a few of the Wildcard race games, where teams have GMs with a clue, who help their teams get to matter in September/October.

And maybe Kenny's mommy will send him to his room and make him think about what he did.  So this doesn't happen again.  Normally I'm against it, but he probably needs a spanking too.

And no Wii tonight.

(rolls eyes)
