White Sox fire interim manager before first game

Cora, Guillen

By Evan Brunell

Even though Ozzie Guillen is gone, the drama continues in Chicago. Interim manager Joey Cora, who is considered a strong candidate to manage somewhere one day, was fired by text message before managing his first game for the White Sox, the Chicago Sun-Times writes.

GM Kenny Williams replaced Cora (pictured, left, with Guillen) with pitching coach Don Cooper, texting Cora and telling him not to bother coming to the park. That's quite an odd development. There hasn't been any news as to the reasoning, but it appears as if the firing was related to Guillen, who managed his final game with the White Sox Monday night and is headed to Florida to manage. Cora is expected to join Guillen in Florida, so it's possible Williams didn't want anyone managing his team for them to leave after the year and follow the just-fired manager. You can understand that rationale.

Cora was the bench coach under Guillen in Chicago, while Don Cooper was in his ninth season as pitching coach. Cooper is expected to interview for the full-time managerial opening. Given the success of Bud Black in San Diego and now John Farrell in Toronto, it's possible Cooper could get the job after decades of pitching coaches never really being considered for the opening. However, the White Sox could also lure back ex-manager Tony La Russa or go in a different direction. No matter what happens, Cooper's job as a pitching coach is safe -- whether in Chicago or elsewhere -- as he's one of the best at his profession.

White Sox fire interim manager before first game

It's a good move by the White Sox. Ozzie gave us what we wanted, a World Series Ring. His dog and pony show is just worn out in Chicago and it's time for someone else to try. I always will be thankful to tha 2005 squad that let me see my favorite team win it all. If La Russa comes back to the Sox it would be fine by me.  He knows what he is doing and has the respect of the players already for sure.

Please people don't be stupid. Ozzie didnt want to quit or leave thats just what they are telling ya.  Its all about power, and Kenny won, Kenny never like Ozzie and Kenny never wanted Ozzie as mgr, he wanted Cito..bad. But Jerry made him take ozzie and he won the ws so he's been stuck ever since. Look was it time..yes. But Ozzie didnt throw all that money away..Dunn, Rios, Pevey, Tehan..the list goes on. They are dead because of old Ken Williams. His ass should be gone too.But like with Krause Jerry will keep him on even though it the wrong thing. Cora s Ozzie boy, thats why he's gone. Classless way too. Very Unprofessional.

Are you kidding me? Kenny Williams sent a *TEXT MESSGAE* to Joey Cora telling him not to even bother showing up to the ball park!
What kind of a man is Williams? Not even man enough to fire him face to face? This just goes to show what is wrong with this organization!
I agree Ozzie was a bit on the strange side, but come on man, He won a world series for this organization and they treat him and his coach Joey Cora.... Just goes to show how bad this White soxs organization really is.   Kenny Williams is a joke!

Shoulda' hired Sandberg

Let Ozzie walk at mid-season, and hired Sandberg.  Worst case scenario: You are where you are now.
Best case: A real leader got these guys to play.

First of all, Ken Williams is a moron. How could you NOT think that Cora wasn't going to go to Fla. with Ozzie? The only way he wasn't going was if you offered him the manager's job full-time right now. That makes you an idiot for naming him interim to begin with. Secondly, if Cooper is a viable candidate for the manager's job as said, why wasn't HE named the interim guy first? You just screwed yourself on both ends...I guess Cooper came in and said "make me interim and give me a shot at the fulltime job or I'm gone?" Doubtful. Williams you are beginning the decline of this team into a joke that will last for years. You have shown ineptness and a lack of decision making here that will permeate into the clubhouse and you will now be questioned in regards to every decision you make. Firing a guy via text before he even comes to manage his first game? How classless can you be? How do you think ANY manager coming in is going to be thinking in regards to this situation and how it was done? Better update your resume Kenny. Bad moves.

It's not a low blow at all. I am sure there are things we don't know about. Ozzie's manipulation of people in the organization made him like a master of puppets.

Kenny may have found a better way to do it but Cora is not going to be the mext Manager of the White Sox so why bother.

I think it send an "I'm in charge" message and enough of this baloney - and i like it

And I AM w W Sox fan

I see a "Marcha" demanding Kenny Williams' firing!!! Just as well, Jerry should do what the McCaskeys dont have the nads to do - blow the whole thing up and start from scratch.  Don Cooper and Bears OC Mike Tice are "Before" and "After" images of each other.  When the CBS Radio outlet has them both on in the same morning, I feel like I'm commuting in Long Island.

I'm sorry, but I thought this was a professional business. Kenny Williams texted Cora to not bother coming in? How about a little professional courtesy and actually calling Cora or even more professionally meeting with him one on one to inform him he won't be managing the Sox...hell, I'm not even a sox fan and even I think thats a low blow. Good call on keeping Kenny around Jerry. Glad to know you actually are human when it comes to making personel decisions. (And I mean you should have booted Williams as well!!!)
