The Marlins announced Ozzie Guillen as their new manager on Wednesday, signing him to a four-year deal worth $10 million, as MLB.com reports.

"We're very excited," Guillen said at a stadium news conference Wednesday. "It's a big, big step in my career, a new chapter. Hopefully I can bring energy, flavor and enthusiasm, but the most important thing is a winning team."

The White Sox released Guillen from his contract on Monday and on Tuesday it was revealed that the Marlins would send two prospects -- infielder Ozzie Martinez and right-hander Jhan Marinez -- to Chicago in exchange for Guillen's rights.

Guillen served as the Marlins' third-base coach in 2002 and 2003 before being named the White Sox skipper for the 2004 season. He led his team to the World Series in 2005. In eight years as Chicago's manager, he went 678-617. Now, he'll be piloting the Marlins during a sea change -- the team is changing its name from Florida to Miami, creating a new logo and moving into a brand-new stadium. In addition, the historically thrifty club is expected to jack payroll up to take advantage of the new stadium and increased fan interest to try to make baseball viable in Miami after years of empty crowds.

"I'm very excited about the new park," Guillen said. "It's pretty nice - wow. I hope the fans will be excited about the new era for the Marlins. They should be excited. I want the fans to go there and say, `This is a beautiful ballpark, but let's watch the guys play.'"

Prior to the news conference,  Guillen tweeted:

Marlins to introduce Guillen as manager

Let the soap opera begin.  I'm looking forward to the inevitable confrontations between Ozzie and the owner, players, media and fans.  Maybe Loria is crazy like a fox on this move.  As if a new stadium wasn't enough, he throws Guillen into the mix for good measure.  This should capture the south Fla fans attention next year, however, I'd be surprised if Ozzie makes it thru 4 years there.

I don't begruge Ozzie the new opportunity with the Florida/Miami Marlins, and I have been a fan of his and wish him success there, but what I want to hear from someone is this... Is there no rule against TAMPERING in MLB? Clearly there had to have been some pretty clear communications in place between Ozzie and the Marlins for some time now - while Ozzie was under contract to the White Sox. The Sox received compensatory minor leaguers in return for allowing him to void the final year of his deal, but still, if there had been no exit assurances given to Ozzie, would he have had the stones to tell Reinsdorf that without an extension he was leaving? Without the exit opportunity afforded to him by the Marlins, Ozzie would have been at risk of becoming the next Bobby Valentine sitting at an ESPN desk or next to Joe Buck. Maybe without the assurances from the Marlins, Ozzie doesn't feel so confident about conffonting the boss! If this was the NFL, I think the Marlins would have been penalized a draft pick or something. This just smells really "fishy" - sorry for the pun. What's done is done, and good luck to Ozzie, and the White Sox will move forward, but tampering with someone that is under contract should not be allowed without some consequences. Wonder if Bud Selig is asking tough questions yet, because he should be.

@zap1mjh

Zap before you start calling people out why dont you get your facts straight.  Guillen left the Marlins back in '04 to coach the White Sox's. Loria and Guillen know what they are getting themselves into.  Do you not think that they own TV's?  They know what they are getting themselves into.  Theres a relationship with Guillen and management.  Guillen would be a good fit in a predominant Hispanic community.

He'll be fine.  Girardi's problem in Miami was that he spoke up.  Guillen's mild manner, cordial demeaner will go over great with ownership.

Ozzie is going to regret this move.  Wait til you butt heads with Luria and you'll be even more nervous Ozzie, you should of checked with Girardi before making this move.  The Marlins suck by the way!
